Genuine advantage again!

Just found this group. I have two questions that have probably been
answered before, but this group is so large, and I am so lazy that
I'll just ask and take the abuse anyway.

1. Is installing genuine advantage and notification required to get
all updates? The update site seems to suggest that.

2. I mistakenly installed kb892130 and kb905474, genuine advantage
and notification in 2006. They are both listed under add and remove in
the control panel. Right now when updating I am alerted to install
kb892130, genuine advantage even though it is already installed.
What is up with that? Did my anti-spyware disable it?

No, you can get them through Automatic Updates without WGA approval. I
would suggest you set AU to inform but not download or install and let
you choose what to download and install. You won't, however, be able to
install WMP11 or Defender unless you go through the Windows or Microsoft
Update web site.

No, it's a new version and you don't need it. I have three computers
running XP and none of them have WGA installed in any of its flavors and
all of them are up-to-date with Windows Update using Automatic Update.

A1. WGA ActiveX Control (KB892130) is required to update via Windows Update
website. It is not required to update via Automatic Updates. Installing
WGA Notifications (KB905474) is 100% optional.

A2. WGA ActiveX Control (KB892130) is frequently updated and you'll have to
accept the update in order to use Windows Update website.

What is the difference between .... manually going to the Windows
Update website or being directed to the Automatic Update website?

Are they different URL's?

You can update manually via Windows Update [1] or Microsoft Update [2]
websites; 891230 must be installed to use either site.

Automatic Updates happens in the background "automatically." [duh] Please
spend some time reading...

This info seems to be counter to what others are saying. Just checked
another computer that never installed genuine advantage. They have
been getting updates all along. I do not know if some updates are not
available without 892130, but they are getting updates.

If they're going to the web site, they have WGA installed. Have them
look at their add ons in Internet Explorer.

If I understand what is being said here you can update via
the pop up icon that notifies you of an update without
having WGA installed. Is this correct?

The Person I am talking about occasionally clicks on the start menu
link and goes to the update site that way. As I understand it that is
how they update without WGA. Am I mis-informed? I may be?

Only if you have Automatic Updates set to inform but not download or
install. If you have it set to automatically download and install, you
will get every and anything Microsoft wants you to get including WGA. To
see what the computer is set for, right click on My Computer/Properties
and then click on the Automatic Updates tab.

If they do that, they have WGA listed as an add on in Internet Explorer.
You can check that by right clicking on the IE icon on the
desktop/Properties/Programs tab/Manage Add Ons.

Don't confuse updating via Automatic Updates and updating via Windows Update
website.

Alias has covered all other bases.
