I normally update windows manually, but (half-rhetorically, he asked:) if
anyone knows ...
High-priority updates
Microsoft Windows XP
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2008 (KB890830)
Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

Are these the same files repackaged monthly/quarterly ? so they 'appear
new'.

So, is the Dec 2008 Removal Tool looking for the same Blaster files etc
(from circa 2004 ?) that the Nov 2008 and the Oct 2008 "updates" searched
for ?

and the "Genuine Advantage Notification " to 'let the user know if your copy
of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be non-genuine, the
tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.' Like 99.999999% of
the visitors to their website, I don't consider these updates"
high-priority" and unlike most other updates I cannot check the "don't
bother me again" box.

A new version of the MSRT is offered every month on Patch Tuesday.

KB905474 [AKA "WGA Notifications tool" and not to be confused with the WGA
ActiveX component on which Windows Update website depends and which is
frequently updated, too] is updated (repackaged) less frequently. All
flavors of KB905474 are and always have been Optional updates (but if you've
already installed one version, you cannot uninstall it now).

So they are the same files, just re-"pushed" ?
OK thanks - so I'm "not missing anything" .

But other than the name, it is still checking for the same old files
(MSBLASTER etc)

The MSRT will quickly scan for signs of any/all "BadGuys" in its database
every time it runs, yes.
