Gov. Kathleen Blanco Refused Bush Aid

Though her state has been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and
thousands are believed dead in New Orleans, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen
Blanco has refused to allow the federal government to take control of
evacuation efforts.

"Shortly before midnight Friday, the Bush administration sent
her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to request a federal
takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans," the Washington Post
reported in Sunday editions.

NewsMax is hardly credible. Give me the link to the Post article
NewsMax claims it is quoting.

Why was the Govenor on TV stating that she delayed Bush's offer for
troops for 24 hours? I didn't see that in your time-line. It was on
Fox and CNN, she said it in front of the camera's - pretty hard to
ignore it or say she didn't say it at that point.

Still haven't found a link to support that claim, huh?

You need to check your facts and not print incomplete and incorrect
information.
Friday 8/26. Air Force 1 landed in Louisana. Bush met with Gov Blanco
and then Blanco and the Mayor. Bush requsted that the Feds take over the
evacuation. Blanco demurred and said that she needed 24 hrs to make a
decision. She did ask for a State of Emergency which Bush agreed to and
declared. She did NOT request any aid at that time. No evacuation was
ordered.
Saturday 8/27. The Mayor ordered an evacuation. Blanco did not sign any
order releasing the State Natl Guard to the Feds. That was done a day or 2
later.
(Yesterday Blanco stated that she thought the Mayor was handling the
evacuation.)
Please note that Bush could not act until Blanco requested aid. Although
she requested the State of emergency, she DID NOT request the aid.
I might also note that the Mayor was in NO. Bush went to NO. The
Governor was in Baton Rouge throughout where she was high & dry and SAFE!
It seems that now Blanco is blaming Nagin and Nagin is blaming Blanco.
I might also add that all the experts have stated that the First
Response is the responsibility of the Local & State Govts and the Feds come
after WHEN REQUESTED!
If you read yesterday's poll you will note that only 13% on the nation
blames Bush.
The Liberal "Blame Bush" campaign is not working.

So conservatively, by YOUR timeline, the Feds took control of the Guard
on on 8/29, and it took until 9/2, 4 days after the Feds took control to
get any substantial National Guard force and food and water into the
city!

What were the Feds doing for four days?!
(Yesterday Blanco stated that she thought the Mayor was handling the
evacuation.)

And the evacuation prior to the storm work better than expected.
Please note that Bush could not act until Blanco requested aid.

4 days of nearly no Federal response After the feds taking control by
YOUR own timeline!

Seems the Vacationer-In-Chief was still in vacation mode even after
arriving in DC!

And Bush never takes responsibility! With Truman, the buck stopped in
the Oval Office. With Bush, the buck stops every place but the Oval
Office.

Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (D). Shortly before midnight Friday, the
Bush administration sent her a proposed legal memorandum asking her to
request a federal takeover of the evacuation of New Orleans, a source
within the state's emergency operations center said Saturday."

The administration sought unified control over all local police and
state National Guard units reporting to the governor. Louisiana
officials rejected the request after talks throughout the night,
concerned that such a move would be comparable to a federal declaration
of martial law. Some officials in the state suspected a political motive
behind the request. "Quite frankly, if they'd been able to pull off
taking it away from the locals, they then could have blamed everything
on the locals," said the source, who does not have the authority to
speak publicly.

A senior administration official said that Bush has clear legal
authority to federalize National Guard units to quell civil disturbances
under the Insurrection Act and will continue to try to unify the chains
of command that are split among the president, the Louisiana governor
and the New Orleans mayor.
So, the governor wanted to play politics with her people's safety and
look what it got them.

By Friday the Feds had already were already way too late to the party,
but it does show that Bush didn't need the Governor to relinquish her
role in order to act. It just a shame that it took so long for the Feds
to get into New Orleans.

Bush could have taken control on his own authority, according to a
senior administration official, and didn't need the governor to agree.

The Vacationer-In-Chief strikes again!

And of course if he had you would be complaining he overstepped his power,
after all she only asked for 24 hours. *sniff sniff*

Today, Fox is reporting, (I realize that Kurt wants a link and wouldn't
believe Fox anyhow) that the Red Cross was in the area of the Convention
Center and the Dome with food and water but the Louisana Emergency Group
(don't know exact name) would not let them deliver it. They wanted the
people out of the City and said if they were fed and watered they would not
leave.
On one hand NO was crying for food and water and on the other hand hand
another NO group refused the Red Cross entry to both places.
And Bush is to blame????????
