Internet Explorer Desktop Icon

Okay, cosmetic issue: my desktop icon for Internet Explorer (7) is wrong.
I've attempted changing it with desktop customisation tools to no avail, it
will only display this one, incorrect icon.

This icon its displaying is one I'm not familiar with it. It looks similar
to a scheduled tasks icon, but with green arrow on it as well?

Anyway - that is unimportant. I was wondering if anyone knew where I might
be able to find the setting that tells Windows where to fetch the desktop
icon for IE from?

Oh - it should be noted that IE icons in both my start menu and programs
menu are correct.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Did you right click the shortcut, take properties, change icon? Is the
correct one displayed there?

Desktop icons aren't typical shortcuts, meaning they aren't *.lnk files with
info pointing to something else. Link/Shortcut files hold their own icon
information and are easily customisable by right-clicking and going into its
properties dialog.

Desktop icons, such as My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin, Internet
Explorer etc. are a part of the shell and handle their settings some,
different, way that I'm not sure about.

There is no standard way to customise the appearance of the IE desktop icon
that I can see. There is no properties dialog for the shortcut (there is a
properties dialog, but that goes directly to my IE properties/settings), nor
is there an option to change the icon within the "Customise Desktop" screen
of the display properties dialog.

Installing 3rd Party desktop customisers seems to suggest that whatever
setting it is, still points to the right icon as these programs seem to
believe that I _should_ be seeing the correct icon, however, no matter what I
change this icon to it continues to show the incorrect, scheduled
tasks-esque, icon.

So, yeah, I'm out of ideas. Let me know if you come up with anything else I
should try.

Thanks,
Jason

P.S My apologies for gross over-use of the word "dialog" throughout this
post :)

Display properties - Desktop tab
Customize desktop button > Uncheck "Internet explorer"
Click OK - OK
Make a new shortcut with [Target :] iexplore.exe

That's cheating! That said, it does also bypass the cosmetic issue at hand so
yeah, it does fix my problem. But it doesn't explain why my icon is wrong in
the first place.

Also, after trying it I can report a new symptom!

I've disabled the IE desktop icon in my display properties, it has
disappeared from my desktop, however, if I goto My Computer and then up a
level (to the "Desktop" in explorer), the IE "shortcut" (complete with bad
icon) is still there.

Try this :
Start - Run - regedit
HKCR\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon
Right side, Default = "shdoclc.dll,-190" (Without quotes)
Restart explorer.exe

This is normal.
