Icons have Arrows!?

Hello,
My desktop icons, and some of the other icons in differnt folders also have
a stupid arrow in the left corner of the icon. I know the desktop icons
originally did not have this arrow.

I know that shortcut icons have this arrow, but the my desktop icons should
not be shortcut icons (i.e. internet explorer, outlook express).

I know at some point I must have changed a setting some where, but I can't
figure out how to change it back!!!

I would rather not download anything to my computer to fix this problem. Is
there anyway I can change icons back so they do not have arrows? After all
the are the original icons not shorcuts! LOL

Thank you,
Melisa

Hi txgrl74,

Right click Desktop background Select Properties / Desktop (tab) click on
Customise Desktop... In General (tab) Tick the icons you want.

Did that work? (If so - you can delete the shortcut ones).

Hi,

Well, most program icons that don't come with your computer do have the
arrow.
Unless you have actually moved some folders into your desktop folder (in
that case there is no arrow as its right there).

I know you don't want to download anything but I would recommend tweakUI
from Microsoft. TweakUI will let you mess around and repair icons if they
are somehow broken.

TweakUI is on the RH side of this page as a download.

Melisa the icons are not stupid, maybe you. There are icons and icons, and
the arrow has a purpose. Google it and find the difference. Or rightclick
icons w/wo arrows to see the differences.

Thank you for the help. All I know is that they use to NOT have arrows and
now they do.

Also I did not mean to offend anyone by calling them "stupid arrows".

Thanks again.

I have just read this.
To get rid of all arrows on your desktop icons, open regedit (Run, or MS key
+ R, type regedit), click on + to open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, go down to
lnkfile(it's quite a way down, type the letter l to quickly get to the l's,
then scroll). On the right panel, delete/OK the IS Shortcut file. The next
time you re-boot, the arrows will have magically disappeared!
Good luck

Hey,
I just got the email from Mike and tried it and it worked!! WOO WOO I did
not find it at first but it you go to "Run" and type in "Regedit".

Then click on + to open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, go down to
lnkfile (it's quite a way down, type the letter L to quickly get to the L's,
then scroll) look under the letter "L" inkfile is there. I thought it was
under "i" but it is under "L".

On the right panel, delete/OK the IS Shortcut file. The next
time you re-boot, the arrows will have magically disappeared!

As quoted from Mike the Hero!

Hope that helps D.

You can also use TweakUI for the same operation.
