Internet Explorer 6 crash, reinstalled 6 but still not working

I am not tech savy--please help. I have used ie6 for quite some time with no
problem. I run windows 98. I recently restarted my computer and suddenly
my internet explorer6, windows explorer, control panel would not
open--instead I got error messages (see below) I ran my online subscription
of virus scan, adaware, and antispyware. I restarted and had same problem.
I then tried repairing ie6 using my windows 98 cd, but it didn't work. So I
had to revert to previous version--ie5. When I restarted my computer,
control panel, windows explorer all worked fine. Problem is, I now had ie5
and wanted my ie6 back. I reinstalled ie6 from windows update site. Had
same problem. I reverted to previous version again (ie5) and tried
reinstalling ie6 from my windows update setup file of ie6 where it was saved
2 years ago. Still having same problem.
This is an example of the error message I am getting--
--When trying to open explorer6= An error as occurred and internet explorer
will now close and this program has performed an illegal operation...the
details are EXPLORER caused an exception eedfadeH in module HELPER101.DLL at
0167:022d4f79.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Start with these emergency measures which might make IE work well enough to
download and run programs.
1. From Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Enable third
party
browser extensions." That should allow IE to work.
You should re-enable browser extensions after the cleanup.
2. Start> Run (type in) msconfig Go to the Startup Tab and if you see an
entry that references"HELPER101.DLL" uncheck it.
3. Download Toolbar Cop from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4126.html
It's only about 65 KB and will fit on a floppy disk. Use it to disable
suspicious BHO's.
4. Download CWShredder from http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm It will
fit on a floppy disk. Run it.

Eventually, you should go to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm work
through the preliminary steps and, if necessary, post a HijackThis log to
the forum at http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30

If these steps don't resolve the problem, please post back to this thread.

Hope this helps,
Don

I fixed the problem with MoveOnBoot (see link below) regarding internet
explorer crash, windows explorer and control panel not working. I had a file
called HELPER101.DLL that had been loaded to my system (probably when my kids
came home from college and downloaded a song, music, song lyrics, or
something). It didn't get deleted when I ran my adaware/virusscan/spyware.
I was unable to delete it on my own.

I found a post at
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/124057.html dated 12/31/04
where another person, using windows XP described the problem as "can't access
windows related icons" (getting similar error messages as I have) and after
running virus scan, etc. still finding ZServ.dll, Helper101.dll, and
BTGrab.dll on their system. To see if you have these files and if your icons
are not working-- or as with me windows explorer not working, so couldn't use
find file function that way-- you can go to start menu and choose find. Then
choose files or folders and search by name (if you know the name of the
file--as with my problem the file name HELPER101.DLL was listed in the error
message I kept getting when trying to open internet explorer 6) or date to
see if you find any file you don't recognize.

You can try to delete it, but if you can't, the person who replied to this
individual suggested that it was caused by Wombat and to go to
www.gibinsoft.net/gipoutils/fileutil/index.htm
to get MoveOnBoot to get rid of unmovable or undeletable files. It is
provided by Gibin Software House and they give you a 30 day free trial. It
worked for me, the file was removed and now internet explorer 6 works,
control panel works, and windows explorer works. I use windows 98. The
person who had the problem posted that MoveOnBoot fixed their issue as well
and they use windows XP. The person also STRONGLY suggested NOT TO VISIT
EMP3WORLD.COM, as the site was the source for all the bad stuff being loaded
to his computer.

I'm sure most of you tech savy people are laughing at me for how long it
took me to figure this out. But for those poor people like me running old
systems on older windows versions, I hope this helps.

Hi, I must have been writing my 2nd post on how I found a way to fix the
problem when you were posting your response. Thank you very much for
replying. I used MoveOnBoot to get rid of the file HELPER101.DLL and now
everything is working again. Should I also do some of the things you
suggest?
Thanks very much
