Internet Access "dead" Even Though DSL Modem Active

I have a Dell dimension 8300 machine with XP Pro O.S. I am accessing the Internet with SBC/Yahoo DSL. My computer runs at 2.8 Ghz with a 80 gig HD and 512 MB Ram.

Several times during the day my Internet connection goes "dead" even though diagnostics show my DSL modem still active (restarting the modem doesn't help). By "Restarting" my computer I can then access the Internet again until the next time the problem occurs. When this problem occurs I can not run Firefox or Opera either. So, I don't think it's an I.E. Problem.

I don't believe I have a bug or spyware since I am using ZoneAlarm Pro for Firewall, etc.; Norton Antivirus; Ad-Aware; Spybot Search and Destroy; Spyware Blaster; SBC Yahoo AntiSpy; and Spyware X-terminator. I update and run these programs daily.

Any help with this problem will be appreciated.

You need to scan your PC for malware/spyware go to
majorgeeks web page go to the spyware tools section, get
either spybot search and destroy or adaware SE they are
free, make sure you update each of them first gathering
the more recent update files, scan your machine and see
if that helps.

If this persists your Winsock32.dll file may be
corrupted, that's the last resort, get the XP winsock fix
file at Kellys Korner

As I said in my original message I use Adaware SE and Spybot search and
Destroy and uppdate and run them daily. Doesn't help. I will take your
suggestion and go to Kellys Korner for a winsock fix (fingers crossed
hopping this works). Thanks for your suggestion.

I used to have problems like this when I was using DSL a few years
ago. My ISP referred to the condition as a "Sync-no-serve" state,
where the Modem was synchronizing with their equipment but not
connecting properly to the computer on my end.

They told me it was not an uncommon condition that happened from
time-to-time. The only solution was for me to reboot the system and
give the modem another shot to sync to both sides of the connection.

Aggravating but certainly not debilitating. It was still better than
dialup and getting disconnected 15-20 times/hour.

Thanks for your reply Frank. what I do daily is click on the "update
button" of each od my "security" related programs. When each one is
updated, if an update is available, I then run each program. I also use
Norton system Works periodically to check my computer. Rarely is a minor
spyware found and then I delete it.

I haven't posted a Highjack yet. Where would I do this? It's been so long
that I forget. Your further advice will be appreciated.

Thanks "NobodyMan". It helps just a very little to know I'm not the only
one with this problem. Are you still bothered with this problem?
