Problems accessing the internet

I've had a plethora of problems accessing the internet of late. First of
all, windows explorer will not open unless I am in safe mode. While my son
is able to access the internet in normal mode, I cannot unless the computer
is in safe mode. As soon as I type in my password, the Yahoo browser closes
with an error message. The computer asks me to uninstall and reinstall my
modem. I have DSL, so I don't know which modem it is asking me to reinstall.

As soon as the internet problems started, applications like Word and
Powerpoint developed problems accessing files and my computer began to crash
repeatedly. What are possible causes for the problems I'm having with the
internet and my PC? What are possible solutions? Inquiring minds wanna
know...

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Make sure the computer is clean first:
