I'm trying to be a good customer and register my Windows XP. Here's
the problem though...my computer has a modem, but is hooked up to DSL.
I can use the internet and email with no problems. I fill out the
registration information and go through the registration wizard and
when it comes to the last page, it wants to dial a 1-800 number. My
computer is using DSL, not the modem! If I disable the modem in
computer manager, the registration wizard fails on the first page
saying:
"To use the online registration process, you have to do one of the
following:
-Install a modem
-Set up an Internet connection
-Configure a proxy connection
If you already have a modem, check to make sure the modem is working
properly."
Why does it insist on using the modem? I already have an internet
connection. The regwiz.exe application is allowed through my firewall.
This is 2006, who is expected to use a dial-up modem anymore? I don't
even have a land-line!! Get with the times Microsoft!! Does anyone
have any suggestions?
