installing xp home

I was running Win ME, and I bought (not a copy, but valid OS) Win xp home,
full version and wanted to do a clean install so I used the me boot disk and
formatted the hdd, when I typed in setup I get this program will not run in
dos: so I set my cd rom as 1st boot device and put in my xp disk and
restarted and got an error not valid disk? How can I get this to install? I
hope this is clear enough

Sure cdrom is set as 1st boot device with xp cd (retail). If so,one can
power off
pc,remove battery, locate the CMOS jumper pin & move from 1-2 position to 2-3
For .45 seconds or so,then back to 1-2 position,replace battery,start pc.On
start-
up,you'll need to set basic BIOS settings (date/time,etc) load optimal
defaults,
then set for any add-ins,set cdrom with xp cd as 1st boot device,hd 2nd,save
and exit...

Thank you I'll give that a try, it will be a few days and I'll get back with
results.

I'm not an expert just self taught but is it possible the CD ROM is an
old model that can't read the "new" CD? I had a similiar problem and
it turned out a "newer" CD ROM read the CD just fine.

I just want to understand. You formatted with the ME disk. Is that correct. Did you after formatting type in A:\ C: and when at C: type in Setup to look like C:\ Setup

What is this drivel. You are dangerous and unbelievable. Why do you persist on creating problems for a poster. Go Away

That was unnecessary. When you do a clean installation of XP
correctly, it happens as part of the installation.

Also, when you formatted with the Me disk, you ended up with a FAT32
partition. Although Windows XP *can* use FAT32, NTFS is XP's native
format, and normally a much better choice.

when I typed in setup I get this program will not run in
dos:

Correct.

so I set my cd rom as 1st boot device and put in my xp disk and
restarted

Yes, that's the correct way to do it.

and got an error not valid disk?

Exactly when do you get the error? Please supply the complete verbatim
text of the message.

Does your drive successfully read other CDs? Will it boot from other
bootable CDs? Will your XP CD boot in a friend's computer's drive?

Once you get your CD problem solved, just boot from the Windows XP CD
(change the BIOS boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and
follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the existing
partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

Jeff, sorry to have to tell you this, but Andrew E. is a well-known
troll in these newsgroups, and usually posts nonsense, and often
dangerous advice. Do not remove the battery, do not fool with
motherboard jumpers. None of that has any bearing on your problem.

It is always safe to ignore anything Andrew E. says.

Jeff..........just do the 1st part of Andrew's reply.
Set your CD/DVD as 1st boot device in the BIOS....Safe and exit
.....Put your XP CD in and reboot.
watch the bootom of the screen for the meaasge "push any key to boot from
CD"
the XP installation should start at that point.
get back to us

Before starting, have you verified that all of your PC's hardware
components are capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be
found at the PC's manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows
Catalog: (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many early
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

Ignore Andrew. He's one of the resident trolls and never deliberately
or knowing posts helpful advice.
