IMAPI problem when burning a CD in XPPro.

Hey all...

using XPPro/SP2 and all is well....but I can now no longer burn a CD using
the built-in XP functionality. a click on the files, then the Copy to CD
works fine, as always pops open the folder holding the chosen files with the
Write these files to CD button - all works fine. I do then insert a brandnew
CD and then click on the button - and I "hear" the drive startup - I get the
normal countdown in seconds and all looks fine. Except the files must not be
written as each and every one of the last 9 CDs is empty - no files
exist....on any box here at the office.

so...I know that IMAPI must be used in this process and yup, it's turned
OFF??? didn't ever do that, so I'm thinking that somehow it must be a file
that is dependant on another Service and that one's turned off...but so far,
I can not get IMAPI to turn on - and stay on. I Start and seconds later it
turns itself off (or so says the Event Viewer)....

can someone here point me to an answer....do I maybe need to "repair" my XP
O/S or some such thing? or is there an easier answer?

Further to this problem, yes it's the IMAPI service that is at fault. A post
here showed me to uninstall then reinstall the drive, which I did. I can now
START IMAPI manually - then burn to a CD - then watch as IMAPI turns itself
off.

I have (now) no other burning software on this box, have of course restarted
but IMAPI refuses to remain ON at all...it looks like I'll need to manually
START it each time I want to burn files to a CD.

Is that it tho - is there no answer that can help me keep IMAPI on all the
time?

Just a hunch: Right click the drive, click properties, click Recording tab,
make sure "enable cd recording on this drive" is checked.

Yup, looked at that first. It is checked as it's supposed to be...

Anyone else know why IMAPI turns itself off all the time? is it because I've
turned off something that uses this service as a dependant one and hence it
can't be on?

Good for you. In my case it was the last thing i checked and in the interim
i ended
up buying an external burner for my laptop based on information supplied by
another forum member suggesting my cd drives laser burner had expired. It had
not.
Somehow that checkbox got unchecked.
