Windows Defender Offline report

Andy

I downloaded Windows Defender Offline to see what's under the hood.

Even though I have the drivers and programs to burn CDs, I was told to download and install IMAPI version 2.0.

I installed it on a pen drive and rebooted as per the instructions.

BIOS was set to look at a USB drive first.

It didn't boot from the pendrive and booted from the hard drive.

So I decided to install it to a CD.

Booted that puppy up, with BIOS set to look for a CD drive first and it
did attempt to boot from the CD.

A pretty blue icon was on the screen, but after 10 minutes of seeing that icon and no messages, I shut er down.

Is Windows Defender Offline in Beta testing ?

I have a second question.

I use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall programs and looked to see if Windows Hot Fixes and IMAPI version 2.0 were listed.

They weren't listed and they weren't listed in Windows Add/Remove Programs either.

The IMAPI version 2.0 install/upgrade that I just installed was not there.

So...can I uninstall those ?

I just ran the mssstool32.exe tool stub loader.

It offers to burn a CD, or it offers to store the download as
a 250MB ISO9660 file. In the latter case, you can use a free CD
burner program, to finish the job. The stub loader might request IMAPI2
support, if you were using DVD media in the optical drive.

In my case, I just selected the "save as ISO" option
instead, and it's downloading now.

IMAPI2 support is an optional download. You'd look in
Add/Remove at the windows stuff installed by KB number,
to spot the KB. Do a search on IMAPIv2.0 to dig up
more KB numbers, because this KB is not the only one.

I tried loading the 32 bit ISO (WDO_Media32.iso) in VPC2007 SP1 and...

it crashed :) Funny stuff.

I use a VM, rather than waste a CD on a download. As
it gives me a quick overview of what to expect if I were
to boot it on real hardware.

When that ISO booted, it put up the Windows 8 "window pane"
thing, in blue. And it sat there, until it blue screened. The
error doesn't indicate what was wrong. They probably created
that OS disc, using WAIK. That's my guess as to what it's
based on.

Just out of curiosity, does your computer support Windows 8 ?
Does it have support for NX/XD bit on the processor ?

My VM solution, isn't compatible with Windows 8, so that
invalidates the test right there. However, I didn't know
when I started testing, that the ISO was based on a
Windows 8 platform, so perhaps we can expect this
solution to only work on 5% of PCs out there ?
Um, clever, that is.

Maybe Microsoft could have built their scanner disc
with a Linux LiveCD :) Like Kaspersky did.

I used a R/W CD, so nothing but a little time was wasted.

----quick side track ------------

There is a pretty neat admin utility called Helges Switchblade that you may find of use.

---------------------------------------------------

I am thru testing the Windows Defender Offline.

I used a Kingston pendrive for it and different Linux varieties won't install properly but it works great for storing other data.

I have had better luck with Verbatim.
