Question
Subject: Write these files to CD does not work 12/25/2005 2:50 AM PST

By: Randall MacDonald In: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

My burner works fine. No device issues. Installed Nero then uninstalled.
IMAPI started. Recording enabled. CDR blank inserted. Drag & Dropped files
show up. In the left panel, the "Write these files to CD" shown. (So is
delete these files.)

When I do click on "Write these files to CD", nothing happens -- no CD
burning wizard is launched. I am sure that Nero did something when it got
control of IMAPI. I right-click on CD burner from "My Computer" and manually
launch CD burning wizard and all goes fine.

It sure sounds like a setting is turned off somewhere. How do I get the left
panel "Write these files to CD" selection to actually launch the wizard again?

Thanks for the response Rick,
I downloaded Tweakui and went to my staging area. All was in order. Files
copied there were fine. I can't change my partitions because they are all in
much use.
I drag & dropped files to my DVD burner and the files showed up in the
staging area. I went to the DVD burner and clicked on it to delete the
"temporary files" but could not (no response, same as "Write these files to
CD" lack of response.) I went to the staging area and deleted them manually.
That worked. Launching the CD burning wizard *does* all with no problems.
It's just the CD/DVD burner icon in My Computer that refuses to launch the CD
burner wizard. The left panel that says "write these files to CD" doesn't.
The words are there underlined, but no response from it. (Same thing with
"Delete these temporary files."
Besides installing Nero a couple weeks ago, I had installed Nero years ago
and then uninstalled it (disliking Nero) only to discover this exact same
problem. My solution then was to reinstall XP.
Must I do a system restore?

Just a guess, but did Nero turn off your "IMAPI CD-Buring COM Service"?
Disable it?

Start---Control Panel----Administrive Tools-----Computer
Management-----Services and Applications----Services-----IMAPI CD-Buring COM
Service

I'm thinking something like that happened to me once with multiple CDRW
software.

Hi Randall,

I'm not really sure as to what's happening. If the burner runs but the links
don't work, then I would tend to think it was a shell function. You might
try running sfc /scannow to replace any damaged files.

Yes, this is why I dislike Nero. I can't find a way to return IMAPI to the
way it was without doing a restore. I may have to anyway.

Thanks Rick,
I appreciate your help.
I ran sfc /scannow. It asked for my XP CD which I gave it. It ran for about
10 minutes and then terminated with no messages -- no anything.
I clicked on my DVD burner, dragged a file over and tried to delete it with
the left pane selection of "Delete these temporary files" but still, no go. I
right click on the temporary file and delete it manually.
I am sure that Nero has done something to XP; I just don't know what. Imapi
is started -- besides, I can burn a CD! Just that left pane selection doesn't
work now.
I am afraid I am going to have to do a restore. We'll see.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Randall,

Just curious now, but how about common tasks in other explorer frames?
Things like moving/copying file - do these work?

Also, I saw that someone mentioned seeing if Imapi was enabled. I would
check too that there is nothing left loading from Nero - usually Nerocheck
loads from a run key.

Yes, all other copy functions -- everything on the computer so far -- work
fine. Before I installed Nero, *only* Nero could do CD/DVD copying etc. But I
lost "drag & Drop" that XP gives me. I quickly uninstalled Nero to find that
I could not get that "left panel" to work on the link-click. If I go to My
Computer, I *can* write/delete fine. Oh, and yes, I knew abouty IMAPI. It had
been stopped after I had uninstalled Nero. That was the first think I turned
back on. (Automatic and "started"). I am sure I can do a restore to get that
stuff all back, but I have since changed many other settings and I really
should not *have* to "fix" Nero's uninstall. It just has me curious as to
what mess Nero has created and how to unmess it. It shows me that I don't
know all that I should about XP, that's all. I'll do a file search on
"nero....." to see what they left behind that I might not have removed.
Thanks again, Rick.

You might want to try Nero's Cleantool:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html

It should remove any remaining remnants of the original installation.

Thanks Rick. I downloaded it and to my surprise found "Nero" all over the
place! I told it to delete everything and did a computer search again. Nero
was still everywhere. I manually deleted files and now all is "clean" except
the registry. God, my registry is bloated. I'm scared to death to delete
things.
Anyway, I still cannot delete or write from the shortcut to the burner. I
must go to My Computer and delete or burn from there.
Not to worry, I'll refrain from beating my computer with a hammer. (My wife
has locked it up somewhere so I can't grab it quickly...)
Thanks for your help, Rick.
Oh, by the way, in my "add remove programs" I have a huge blank that I
cannot remove. All other programs are fit and proper. Any idea how I can
track that down and remove it?

Hi Randall,

On the add/remove issue, there is a fix here from MVP Kelly, line 226 on the
right side:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I'm sorry that I don't have anything further I can offer you on the CD
functions problem.

The blank space in Add / Remove Programs can be caused by AutoCad.
There are other causes too.

Go to Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Click on "A" and scroll down to Add / Remove Programs for some ideas.
