Greetings
I have XP pro and Internet Explorer six. I am unable to make "hot" links
work from within a web site. Similarly when I click on a link within an
e-mail it doesn't work. I must always type the URL or copy and paste. In a
related problem when I click on "view profile" within Yahoo! messenger it
tells me that the file does not have a programme associated with it for
performing this action and to create an association in the folder options
control panel.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
with thanks
Sam

Hi,

If none of those help, like they didn't for me just hold down the shift key
when you click on the link.

Hi Don thanks for the reply.... responses in line:

Don said:

tried all of these but unfortunately no success

"Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it."

i have only URL:internet shortcut not HTTP protocol
could this be the problem?

Alternatively it may be easier to uninstall Internet Explorer and downloaded
the latest version (sizeof download is not concern) but how do you go about
this?

Thanks again

Sam,
Do you have the file type "N/A URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol" ?

And, you can't uninstall IE6 from XP Pro. You can repair it.

Hi Sam,

1. Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to:
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\http
2. Click "Registry" menu and export this key (to backup).
3. Delete "http" entry.
4. Click Start, Run and type "Control Inetcpl.cpl" and click "Programs" tab in the resulting dialog
5. Choose "Reset Web Settings"

The URL http association is fixed. See if the problem persist. If yes, try IEFIX util available from :
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm

NOTE: If the problem is fixed, post the contents of the REG Export (the "http" key which you backed up) here.
