Search Links in IE6 don't work after uninstall of IE7 Beta 2

After uninstalling IE7 Beta 2, links from search results in IE6 don't work
unless I right click and instruct to "open in new window." Links from within
favorites and history work fine. Have followed KB instructions regarding
re-registering Urlmon.dll and others to no avail. Attempted to reinstall IE6
without success.

Additional info: I have 3 logins on this home PC. In the course of trying
IE7, I only actually opened IE7 on 2 of the 3. On the one ID I did not use
IE7, the search links work fine.

I am suffering from exactly the same affliction. Let's hope someone can
figure this out.

Did you uninstall IE7 Beta2 in both User Profiles?

Was an earlier version of IE7 Beta ever installed in any User Profile?

1. All 3 profiles have administrator access. I installed IE7 Beta2 in one
profile (it replaced IE6 in all three profiles) and opened the program in
that profile and one other. The one profile I didn't open the IE7 program
from works fine.

2. The install of IE7 Beta2 was the first and only attempt at IE7. It was
installed for less than an hour as I did not like the lack of a Search
Assistant sidebar.

Thanks.

1. Try re-registering all of the DLLs listed in this KB article...

2. Installing the latest Cumulative Patch for IE may solve the problem as a
side-affect. Check in at Windows Update.

Thanks, PA Bear.

I tried the suggestions from 281679 thrice last night without success. I
tried again just now with no effect. I also downloaded and reinstalled the
cumulative update and see no difference.

Could it be the security settings in Internet Properties? The only change I
made at the behest of IE7 was changing (raising) the security level on the
restricted zone.

Is there a (safe) way to copy the settings from one profile to another?

...The only

level on the restricted zone.

Tell us more about this, especially the "at the behest of IE7" part. In the
current build of Ie7 Beta2 (v7.0.5346.5), I don't believe it's possible to
change anything in Internet Options > Security tabs. (I know I can't.)

When did you install IE7 Beta2? Did you download the installer from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/default.mspx or, e.g., MSDN
downloads or...?

The above is truly a mystery to me. It suggests corruption in 2 of 3 User
Accounts, but I'm not sure the install of IE7 Beta2 has anything to do with
it (unless your reply to the first section above gives us any additional
clues).

Hopefully you have a usable Restore Point which predates the install of IE7
Beta (build?), as that may be your only recourse, short of Reinstalling IE
or formatting & reinstalling Windows.

On changing security settings at the behest of IE7:
When I opened IE7 (in each profile), I had one of those info bars at the top
of the screen warning that my security levels were not set high enough to be
safe. On the first profile, I changed the levels for each zone in Internet
Options to the default/recommended setting. On the second profile I only
changed the restricted zone settings.

On downloading IE7 Beta2:
I receive the "Microsoft Download Notifications" on a weekly basis directly
from Microsoft. IE7 Beta 2 was on last week's list and I downloaded from the
microsoft.com site on 4/30 at the following link:

Just tried the restore point from before I installed IE7 Beta 2 and all is
well. I wish I could have (with your help) figured out the cause of the
problem, but at least things are back to normal. Thank you for your patience
and assistance.

Kylemagill: You may want to try a restore point, too, if your problem does
indeed match mine.

Thanks, I /think/ I understand now, except for...

I'm running IE7 Beta2 (v7.0.5346.5) and the "Default/Recommended" buttons on
Security tabs are not available to me. I wonder if you installed the same
build (or if my own install was somehow compromised)?

If you do, I suggest you try System Restore, selecting that Restore Point.
Reboot twice afterwards.

On the other hand, MS is offering free phone support for IE7 Beta2. You
might give 'em a call:

In the meantime, I've discovered that the above is NOT the default in this
build, so it was something running in the background when I installed IE7
Beta2 that caused this.

Ya learn something new every day!

Interesting, Fletch - I had considered the restore but dismissed the
idea. I actually called the microsoft IE7 support line. They forwarded
me to a IE6 tech who took control of my computer and reset literally
every setting in IE6 under every tab in Tools->Options. It took about
15 minutes and solved the issue. I could have done it if I had known.
Anyway, its resolved.
Cheers,
KM
