IE6 is forced closed when opening pdf pages

I'm running Windows XP Pro version 2002, SP2.
IE6 version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

On some websites, with links to pdf documents which open in a new window,
IE6 reports an "...encountered a problem and needs to close. We're sorry..."
type error.

As an example, one of the windows which opens just before I see this error,
has the following title at the top:

The window stays blank where I normally see a pdf document, then I get the
error. I have allowed IE6 to report the error several times. When I looksee
what the error report contains, it's always the same. The error signature is:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: msvcr71.dll
ModVer: 7.10.3052.4 Offset: 000017fb

This behaviour does not happen when I click the same link from a different
computer - the page opens with the displayed document.

After browsing through similar posts, I can report I am up to date on virus
protection and am currently clean AFAIK. Windows Defender, Spybot S&D,
javacool Spywareblaster are all up to date and report no threats. Lavasoft
AdAware reported some tracking cookies and one attempt at a browser hijack,
but I still have the original problem after cleaning those.

Other websites which have a PDF icon representing a document, work fine in
that clicking the icon, opens Adobe reader and displays the document.

Incidentally, I tried running a system restore and after Windows re-start,
it was unable to restore to that particular restore point - I have not tried
that again.

If someone has any ideas about how to fix this problem, or needs more info,
please reply. Thanks in advance.
