IE will only save as .bmp not .jpg

I posted the following message in reply to a question but I'm repeating it
here as it may be of wider interest. It was posted in reply to the hoary old
chestnut:

"When I try and save any picture it tries to save as untitled.bmp instead of
a
jpeg. How do I get to save jpeg?"

My reply read:

"A workaround is to click E-mail Picture..., Cancel and then Save Picture
As.... The picture is then saved in its original format.

Seeing that the solution is as simple as this, MS really should fix this
ongoing curse in IE6. Does anyone know if it's been fixed in IE7?

Perhaps someone will write a short program to click the three buttons in
succession when one clicks Save Picture As...?"

If this simple workaround works for others too, it makes one wonder about
the complex explanations offered for the problem and its solution. It seems
to me like a simple bug.

Many thanks. I had already tried everything except moving the Temporary
Internet Files folder, which seems a new fix that wasn't there last time I
looked. I've now done this too but seeing that the problem is intermittent
it will take a while before I can say whether or not it has worked for me.

As a matter of interest, why does my workaround work if a downloaded
program is corrupt or the cache is full or whatever?

And now the Disk Cleanup utility no longer cleans the Temporary Internet
Files folder, so I'll presumably have to do this manually from now on. Or is
there a fix for this?

O

oops!!

Ken,

The problem you had is a well know issue with IE and I don't know if IE7
will have it fixed or not. Anyway, IE7 is still a Beta and many fixes will
be applied before (and after...) the final release.

Try also CCleaner, IMO the best cleanup utility available and also FREE:

www.ccleaner.com

One IMPORTANT suggestion though: ALWAYS reboot after running a CCleaner
scan/cleanup.

Cheers,

Many thanks again. I'm pleased that I can hold on to my cherished - some
might say paranoid - belief that it's really just a bug, and that the MS
workarounds were merely stumbled upon and found to work, albeit
inconsistently and only temporarily. I'm even a bit chuffed that my
workaround works consistently every time (at least for me).

I seem also to be picking up other hiccups as a result of moving the
Temporary Internet Files folder, eg a program I have been using for a long
time suddenly requires that I enter the activation key again. I can't see
the connection but there it is.

MS needs to add to KB 810978 the fact that the Disk Cleanup utility will no
longer work and other hiccups may occur if the fix of moving the Temporary
Internet Files folder is adopted.

Thanks for the tip about CCleaner. I'll try it. I use Hitman Pro 2, which
I can also recommend. It runs several well-known anti-spyware programs one
after the other, eg Adaware, Spybot, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Blaster, Spyware
Doctor, CW Shredder, etc. It too is free. But it too now misses cleaning
the Temporary Internet Files folder.

One point I haven't mentioned is that I have the latest update to IE6 but
this hasn't cured the problem, although I think that it occurs less
frequently than it used to.
