IE "Save Picture As..."

======================================================================
In Internet Explorer, when right click on a *.jpg picture and then click on "Save Picture
As..." -
The filename is "untitled" and the only "Save as type" option is Bitmap (*.bmp)
It is set to Save In "My Pictures"

Operating System = Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (All Windows Updates are
current)
Internet Explorer = 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
Zone Alarm Security Suite = 5.5.602.004
Internet connection = Cox Cable accessed via Linksys WCG200 (Ethernet)
Ad-Aware SE Personal, Build 1.05 is installed and up to date and no spywares detected
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 is installed and up to date and no spywares detected
SpywareBlaster 3.2 is installed and up to date and set to protect all listed applications

Folder Options | File Types - JPG (JPEG Image) set to open with Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Preview Release does not have this issue -
Right click on a *.jpg picture and click on "Save Image As..."
Has the correct filename (*.jpg) and Save as Type is JPEG Image

I am using pictures at this site for troubleshooting: http://www.jpeg.org/

I have found the following articles:

Article 1:
Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260650

Article 2:

Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/250747

Article 1 was useless - at least in my case

Article 2 workaround does work

Does anyone know of an actual fix for this issue?

A registry hack perhaps?

If previous efforts have not worked, you may have a corrupted "index.dat"
file in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder in your profile. Here is my
fix.

If you have enabled to "make your folders private", you need to shut this
off.
*Rightclick Start button | click Explore
*Rightclick your Username in "Documents and Settings" folder | Go to
"Sharing...."
*UNCHECK - "Make this folder private"
*Be sure there is another User Account set up on the machine as
Administrator.

Now:
*Log off your User account and Log on to the system with a different User
Account that has administrative privileges. (or use hidden Administrator
from Safe Mode)
*Rightclick Start button | Explore
*Expand your own User account to: \Documents and
Settings\your_user_name\Local Settings
*Delete the "Temporary Internet Files" folder. If Windows complains that
it's a system folder - go ahead and delete - Windows will build a brand new
folder when you log back in.

Assuming this works, you may want to check out a little program called
CacheSentry http://www.enigmaticsoftware.com/
This will keep the index.dat file from corruption, among other things.

Did you clean out your temporary internet files? Then, if you have a page
already open in the browser, refresh it and then try and save the picture.

That happens when the Temporary Internet Files are too full. In IE click
Tools | Internet Options. Click Delete Files in the Temporary Internet
files section of the General tab. On the next window place a check mark in
the box to Delete all offline content.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and scroll
down to the Security section. Uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to
disk".

jopa66 is DA BOMB (check jopa66 posting) -

Evidently my Temporary Internet Files folder was corrupt -

Because I am running XP Pro with Simple File Sharing disabled,
I first had to enable Simple File Sharing and then uncheck "Make this folder private"
option for my own folder under Documents and Settings

I then booted to Safe Mode and logged in as the Built In Administrator
account (In my case it is renamed and password protected)
One strange deal was that when I tried to navigate to my Temporary Internet Files folder,
there was no Local Settings folder under my folder (?????)

However when I searched on Temporary Internet Files, I found it -
When I tried to delete it I got an error that "the disk was full, etc" and
it could not be deleted -
Checked the properties of it and it was 0 bytes -
Yeah that sounds corrupt all right

I closed Search and opened it again and searched again and my
Temporary Internet Files folder was gone.

I then rebooted to Normal Mode and saw that my TIF folder had been rebuilt
and in its normal place -
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Temporary
Internet Files
(At least "normal" for me)

I set my folder back to private and disabled Simple File Sharing -

IE is now saving *.jpg files correctly

(It's all so ponderous)

THANK YOU joppa66
