IE in Windows XP proffessional crashing when Sun JRE v1.3.1_02 is installed

After installing and running all available online updates
from Microsoft Online updates Web site on a machine
running Windows XP Professional edition, when you install
Sun Java Runtime Environment v 1.3.1_02 and you try to
access a site that uses the Java plug-in. Microsoft
Internet Explorer crashes.

Internet Explorer has encounter a problem and it needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

has anyone had dealt with this situation? is there a
conflict?
