Recently I notice IE is slow to open initially. Once open, navigation seems normal. IE is the only program I'm noticing is slow to open initially. I'm up to date with patches, including KB832894. My most recent updates are KB828028 and KB828026, both installed Feb. 10th. I run XP Pro SP 1
Thanks for suggestions.

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Well, to date..
Ad-Aware, Spybot S & D, F-Prot AV for Windows and Tauscan trojan detector, all updated, find no suspicious file(s.) Fred Langa's Langa Letter today talked about winsockxpfix.exe; I tried it, to no effect. I installed CacheSentry, also with no appreciable effect, so far at least
This is a puzzler. It only effects Internet Explorer and ONLY when it first opens; it's just dog slow to initially load. Once loaded it behaves normally. Something---an MS patch or something I've installed---MUST have messed with IE's settings. If I just knew what to look for I'd attack it and, hopefully, fix it. I've used this OS and this browser virtually problem-free for many months now.

I just added a HOSTS file, as recommended at mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm. IE now opens immediately, as it usually did. My thanks for this apparent fix for a very puzzling problem. I'd like to learn more about why this cures IE's slow-to-load behavior. I certainly wouldn't have expected it to solve the problem. I'll now reboot and make sure it's fixed! :) Thanks to all for your input.

Interestingly, after installing the HOSTS file recommended at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm the problem
disappeared---until I rebooted. Baffling.

Did you eliminate any scumware?
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Continuing troubleshooting, I ran System File Checker ("c:\ sfc /scannow") and CheckDisk at a reboot("c:\ chkdsk /F /R /V".) SFC detected nothing unusual. When CheckDisk had completed its scan my video display dropped to its lowest setting. Using System Restore I restored normal operation; however, what I think of as the washed out "Safe Mode video setting" wouldn't have been triggered had things been normal
I ran, but decided to abort a Pest Patrol scan. When IE closed and I opened it again it opened normally---but only that one time. All my updated "anti" programs say the system is clean. CacheSentry, QuikfFixXP, a new HOSTS file and WinsockfixXP have had no appreciable effect that I can detect. Something must have corrupted or changed a setting in IE that it references when it first opens up. Once open, all seems normal.

What version of Windows? How does Windows Explorer open? How does Outlook Express open?

XP Pro SP 1 is my OS, updated with the most current patches. I don't use Outlook Express. Windows Explorer, and every other program I use, opens normally. I just updated my video driver(nVidia R60376 for a Dell Dimension 8200 using the GeForce 4 Ti 4600 128 MB card) to no appreciable effect. Thanks for your help.

I deleted all my temp internet files, cookies and history and things seem to
be back to normal. Maybe worth a try.

Have a look at this Article

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378&Product=ie

How much RAM memory? What is your processor speed?
Are you allowing Windows to manage your virtual memory? Have you installed any memory boosters or the like? These can be counter productive!

How large is each partition / drive and how much free space?

I suggest you Enable Show Hidden Files and Folders. To enable show hidden
files select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings
and place a check before Show Hidden Files and Folders. Next Enter Windows Explorer and place the cursor on each drive letter in turn, right click and select Properties.

Also Norton can create "Protected Storage" back up files which you may not be seeing!

I found this too. It is very annoying. I'm wondering if it is
something to do with KB832894 which I recently installed.

I have an external modem and what seems to be happening is that there
is some download activity before IE shows the first screen. I am set
up to display a blank screen on initial load so I have no idea what
this might be. Can anyone suggest anything?

I am using Win2K SP4 I don't use Outlook Express.

First, thanks for a terrific support forum and your and the other guys' input. I run 512 MB physical RAM with an Intel 2.2 Gb processor. I set Virtual Memory at 2.5 times my physical RAM: 1280 MB, initial and maximum. No RAM boosters. One 40 (actually 37.2) Gig C drive with approx. 78% free (10.5 used, 26.6 free.) No Norton products; as with Real Player, I don't like the way they want to take over a hard drive. Hidden files revealed.

Derek,

I also have my IE home page set to blank. Normally it loads in a flash. As I mentioned in Jim Cooley's earlier post about KB832894, with this patch installed my initial loading time for IE was approximately 12 seconds. Once I uninstalled it (the patch, that is) IE loaded normally.

I'm not sure how to uninstall the patch. Under Add/Remove programs
I see Internet Explorer Q832894 Size 16.7 MB. Is this IE itself
and if I remove it does it remove IE altogether? Or is this just the
patch and if I remove it, it will revert to pre-patch?

You want quick loading or you want a secure system?

I have no problem with slower loading if it means a secure system.
What I would like, however, is an explanation of what has changed in
IE to cause this delay.

I have run some preliminary checks which say my browser doesn't have a
parasite. However I realise that these things exist and can be
"acquired" so I appreciate your good advice on getting rid of them.

AFAICT KB832894 installed correctly and I dont believe I have the
POST problem that the patch corrects. So I don't think this is at the
root of the problem. However, if you are saying that 831167 fixes
this delay in loading then I will install it.

At the moment I am reluctant to follow 832894 with anything else.

Thanks for the help

Having run out of ideas, I uninstalled KB832894. The slow initial loading (approx. 12 sec. on my XP Pro, 2.2 Gb system w. 512 MB RAM) of IE 6 SP 1 is no longer a problem. A fellow named Jim Cooley reports the same problem on his XP Pro setup after installing KB832894 (see Jim's more recent post.)
Thanks to all for the suggestions. In the future I won't be so eager to install new patches.

The overwhelming majority of IE5.5+ users, in all OSS, do not have this
problem after installing MS04-004. To assure a clean install, your
anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running processes
closed before going to Windows Update and when downloading/installing from
any MS page.

Look for errors associated with the install in Wndows Update.log and
iuhist.xml.

Many, including me, have found IE behaving much better after installing this
interim patch to Q832894, released 13 Feb-04:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=831167. YMMV.

That will just remove the patch.
