IE 6 SP 1: Problem with opening links in a new window

I use IE 6 SP 1 on NT 4 SP 6. Recently (quite possible after an
installation of 3rd-party software) I started experiencing problems
with opening links in a new window.

New window is created but not responsive. The same link would open
normally in the same window or if pasted in a freshly started IE
instance.

I tried to "repair" IE from "Add/Remove Program" dialog. It didn't
help.

Would would be an appropriate troubleshooting sequence in such
situation?

TIA, Eugene

One more detail: If I click on stop and then Refresh - the web page is
loaded immediately.

Don,

Thank you very much for the reply.

This is what happens. When I clicked on a link you provided (from
Google Groups web interface) I got a completely blank page (including
the Address box). After I clicked on "Stop" the URL appeared and after
Refresh the entire page followed.

I opened my Windows Explorer (following the instructions) but "Tools"
menu does not have "Folder Options" item. Should it exist on Win'NT?

TIA, Eugene

I followed this thread because I had the same problem. After formatting and
reloading XP and IE have been getting blank windows. I followed links and
did the workarounds and finally the .dll changes allowed enough windows to
open that I can now reply to this thread. After spending a couple hours
making a whole series of changes I still notice a couple blank windows (which
I could live with but they didn't exist on the factory software
installation). One is a photo window in a site that opens and said
"about:blank" and nothing else. Its not a full window so I don't have the
option to stop/refresh. Another live video webcam fails to open.

I feel like I about 95% fixed mine. I could live with that but........ mel
