Problem uninstalling IE 6

G

Guest

Using Windows 2K SP-4 and IE 6 I am having unsolvable proplems with IE 6 so I
am trying to uninstall. Following the steps in MS 293907 I could not find
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 in my add delete programs so I removed the SP-4
service pak and now I have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP-1 in my add
remover software. When I click to uninstall it goes into a repair Internet
Explorer 6 which I followed the steps to repair which didn't fix my problem.
It will not allow me to uninstall IE 6 SP-1. It keeps going into the repair
popup and all other options are greyed out. Can some one help me get rid of
this so I can install the original IE6 and start over?

Thanks for looking at my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for responding. The first link you mentioned ends up pointing me to
IE 5 issues, I now currently have IE - 6 SP-1. I think my IE-5 backup is gone
and thats why none of this seems to work. The second link refers mostly to
Win XP the one article 293907 is how I have now gotten to where I am, Third
link gave me 27764 which told me to remove the SP if MS IE was not showing in
the add remove this also got me to where I am and 291558 told me to try and
reinstall IE to create a new backup but my disk is an earlier version of IE6
and when I down load IE6 SP-1
while installing either from hard drive or opening from the the download
gives me a missing file error while extracting the download bar says
"Extracting file: update\update.exe to Directory:

Hi Skip :)

I don't think that you've shot yourself in both feet just yet ;-))

'k....let's take this a step at a time, and work through the process......

You said you were having irresolvable problems with IE and needed to
uninstall. What were the original problems you had with IE that prompted
you to uninstall it? Knowing the previous problems may help determine why
the uninstall is not working for you now.

Also, have you tired to do a repair of W2K yet? Often repairing Windows
restores missing files for the original install of IE. Then you can go from
there. Here are the instructions for the repair if you have not already
done so:

How To Repair Windows 2000

Windows 2000 step by step repair instructions:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/win2k/repairw2k/page1.htm

How to perform an "in place upgrade" or system repair.
http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=8356

Difference between Manual and Fast repair
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238359

You will also have to go to the Windows Update and reinstall all the
necessary updates.

If you have tried and it was not successful, what were the problems/reasons
it did not repair? Any error messages, the exact wording if you can
remember, or try to be as close as you can. It may help point to the
current problem.

Also....there is a way to completely erase IE from the system, and then
reinstall by doing a repair of W2K. It *may* be another alternative.

First let me know on the repair. OK?

Hang tight.....the bull ain't out of the chute yet. ;o))

Hi Jan

I went through the Windows repair but it didn't change anything.
How this all started was I had a big search bar show up on my IE6 SP-4
window and couldn't get rid of it. I went throught the spyware/hijack process
to no avail and during the Hijack process I think I deleted some file that I
needed. Because thats when I started to get the missing .gif and .jpg or
Action canceled on sections of my Yahoo home page. I got rid of the search
toolbar by location a websight from its right click source and I emailed them
complaining asking them how to get rid of it. Turned out to be in my
add/remove software with a name that I couldn't identifiy as them. But of
course this didn't fix my new IE problem. No one really responded with
anything that worked and in those wanderings I was told to repair IE. I
didn't have a MS IE6 on my add/remove so the instructions were to remove
SP-4. So I removed SP-4 ended up with IE6 SP-1 of which I can only repair not
remove. Sorry about the lenght of this but I have been at this for days.
Anyway now I cannot access MSN.COM hotmail from this computer because none of
my two .netpassports accounts will sign me on this sight. I get Action
Canceled on something call Flash 7. Usually by this time I have given up and
formated and started from scratch but this time I am going to extra lengths.
I have lots of stuff on this computer that I don't want to reload.

Hi Skip :)

OK...when you ran the HiJackThis log to create the log file, did you save a
copy of the log to your hard drive?..... (crossing fingers hopefully). I
ask because if you did, then the files you deleted by mistake *may* be
restorable from that backup log. It is one of the fail-safe features of
HJT, but, you have to save the log.

Second, did you delete these files on your own, or did you post the log and
have an expert review it and recommend they be deleted? This I ask because
that is another source of files that may be retrieved.

I have something else I am checking now. Let me know about the above.

Hi Skip :)

I've discussed the issue with some of the experts here, and they provided a
few other suggestions that we can try to see if we can get you able to
repair or reinstall, so's you can get back on track. Hopefully, it won't
take too long. :)

First Step.....as for the HJT backup log,

Courtesy of Mow Green -

HJT saves a backup of files removed by default. That would be the

best scenario, to restore the crud and the files together.

Open HJT, click the Config button, then the Backups button

(This backup should be in the same folder as the HJT is located in. Then we
can take the process one step at a time, post the log to one of the forums
and let the experts see what needs to be deleted again).

Second Step ....

Courtesy of Frank Saunders -

Pay special attention to the last 3 lines here:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
The section
Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet
Explorer 6
works on earlier versions of Windows.

Third Step.....

Courtesy of Jon Kennedy -

If he's having problems doing a reinstall...

Find and remove the Active Setup Log.txt file, if present.
Find and delete the Msdownld.tmp folder, if present.
Find and delete the Iemigrat.dll , if present. (It will be hidden.)
Find and clear out the Windows Update Setup Files folder, if present.
Delete the "IE System Migration" value from the following registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Migration\100 (if
present)
Reinstall IE and components.

Run Repair from the command line as mentioned at the bottom of this article?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177

If you have any questions on any of the above, just post back.

Windows 2000 step by step repair instructions:

http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=8356

Difference between Manual and Fast repair
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=238359

You will also have to go to the Windows Update and reinstall all the
necessary updates.

If you have tried and it was not successful, what were the problems/reasons
it did not repair? Any error messages, the exact wording if you can
remember, or try to be as close as you can. It may help point to the
current problem.

Also....there is a way to completely erase IE from the system, and then
reinstall by doing a repair of W2K. It *may* be another alternative.

First let me know on the repair. OK?

Hang tight.....the bull ain't out of the chute yet. ;o))

Hi,
Thanks for responding. The first link you mentioned ends up pointing me
to
IE 5 issues, I now currently have IE - 6 SP-1. I think my IE-5 backup is
gone
and thats why none of this seems to work. The second link refers mostly
to
Win XP the one article 293907 is how I have now gotten to where I am,
Third
link gave me 27764 which told me to remove the SP if MS IE was not showing
in
the add remove this also got me to where I am and 291558 told me to try
and
reinstall IE to create a new backup but my disk is an earlier version of
IE6
and when I down load IE6 SP-1
while installing either from hard drive or opening from the the download
gives me a missing file error while extracting the download bar says
"Extracting file: update\update.exe to Directory:

Using Windows 2K SP-4 and IE 6 I am having unsolvable problems with
IE 6
so I
am trying to uninstall. Following the steps in MS 293907 I could not
find
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 in my add delete programs so I removed
the
SP-4
service pak and now I have Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 SP-1 in my
add
remover software. When I click to uninstall it goes into a repair
Internet
Explorer 6 which I followed the steps to repair which didn't fix my
problem.
It will not allow me to uninstall IE 6 SP-1. It keeps going into the
repair
popup and all other options are greyed out. Can some one help me get
rid
of
this so I can install the original IE6 and start over?

Thanks for looking at my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Skip :)
I did recover the log and of course got back all my nasty stuff. It didn't
fix any IE6 issues. I now have another log into aumha for the experts to
review but I am sure it well take a couple of days for someone to get on it.
Sooo........I'll be back. Thanks for your help so far. It's much
appreciated.

You're very welcome. Unfortunately, yes, that was the other side of the
coin, getting back the nasties as well. But, they can be taken care of, and
hopefully, it will allow the folks at AumHa to see what is causing the
problem, and help you get it resolved.
