IE 6.0 wont load

Hello, my PC was running just perfect until I downloaded
the newest Windows Updates. Now, a couple of things are
happening, and NOT happening. After downloading the
updates, and then performing the restart, things were not
the same.
I hookup to the net by way of telephone DSL, which I get
thru AOL, by way of Verizon. I also have dialup as well.
When I connect to the web with dialup, all is well........
though Slow, of course.
Now when I hookup with DSL, I can only browse with the
Aol IE running, and can't do any downloading. If I click
on the "Big Blue E", to startup the stand alone IE v6.0 or
Mozilla, it won't load a page at all. Also, while on the
DSL, I can't download anything, files or Windows patches.
I also can't access any webpages that use JAVA either.
They just sit there like their in neutral. The only way to
use Java on those pages that need it, is to use dialup
only.
Now, I'm running a home network with a Linksys wireless
router, though at the moment, I'm the only PC hooked up,
and thats with an ethernet wired connection. I have tried
tons of things. Some people and web-help sites have said
that Norton can act funny sometimes, so just uninstall and
then restart the PC. After rebooting they said to just
reinstall Norton....... been there, done that.......
Nuttin' ... no change at all. I even resorted to doing a
complete C:\drive reimaging, to correct any software bugs.
Believe it or not, I still can't download. I have reloaded
Java, Aol software too.
Then I started thinking.... can't be software......
Maybe it's hardware? Since using regular dialup, is
actually bypassing the router all together. I checked all
wire connections and they are fine. I think, maybe it's
the router? I checked all the settings and their just
fine. I brought the router next door to my friends house.
It works just fine on his PC. Remember, I can access the
DSL connection through the router. I just can't download
anything or get Java to run or IE6.0 to work anymore.
I truely hope I've given enough info to have you
identify and solve this for me, or at least steer me in
the right direction. I'm not getting my monies worth this
way, I know that. I have searched many tech help sites and
read myself BLUE in the face. The Microsoft help sites ,
are NO HELP.
I'm running>winXP-home, with all the service packs and
patches>InternetExplorer6.0>AsusA7V333>1.8GhzAthlonXP>512DD
Rmemory.
Thanks, Gilly

Hi everyone, I just wanted to tell you all that I solved
my problem. It was all caused by setting changes that
happened due to the recent Windows Update. I don't know if
this fix will pertain to the others out there that I've
run into, but here it goes.
A setting in the Internet Explorer program got changed.
TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>CONNEC-TIONS>.... the "Never dial a
connection," was not checked, when it should be for DSL
and other constant type connections. You were the closest
to the problem GLC, in my router, the service protocal was
changed from PPPOE, to something else, but anyway, it
should be set to PPPOE.
Those two settings were the cause of all my problems. I
want to thank all those souls who took the time to give
help to the needy. It certainly helped jog my thoughts,
and I finally stumbled onto the setting screw-ups. Thanks
again, topper
