Help - IE Problems With DSL

A

Allan De Grandis

Has anyone had a problem accessing certain sites with IE
6 over a DSL connection ?? It's really bizarre because
it's not just secure sites.

I recently went to SBC DSL from AOL dialup and I have all
of the XP updates installed.

Now I can access SBC Yahoo for my mail via either SBC
dialup or AOL dialup, but when I try over the DSL
connection I hang and eventually get the infamous "Server
cannot be found or DNS error".

What's strange is that I can access a number of other
secure sites and I have Yahoo set to standard access, not
secure. In addition, the same symptom occurs when I try
to use the Windows Update. In fact, I couldn't post this
message via DSL.

I've tried every change to the Internet Options that
exists, including resetting to default. I've also tried
Netscape and it has the same symptoms.

As an FYI, I've also cleaned up a fairly bad problem with
spyware and Norton has quarantined a number of trojans.
I've also tried to restore prior to the DSL install with
no luck.

Thanks for any suggestions because I'm just about fed up
and I'm ready to re-install XP to fix this problem.

Allan,
A few things to try:
When I have a connection problem with DSL, I shut everything down (including
powering down the DSL modem.) After a couple of minutes, I restart the
computer, then power up the DSL modem after Windows has loaded.

But, I suspect that AOL is contributing to your trouble. I would uninstall
it then run repair on IE. See:
318378 - How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q318378
You'll have to update IE again after the repair.

Hope this helps,
Don
