icons

all of my icons are starting to be altered. I noticed some time ago that some
of my files/folders didn't have the appropriate icon .. typically the icon
that would appear was a something that resembled a white box with a blue menu
bar at the top, Now all of the icons are starting to change. When I opened my
control panel I got the same white box with a blue bar and now in the white
area there are 3 marks/dots in red green and blue.. too small for me to see
what they represent.
I just re-installed a program and the same icon appeared as the short cut.
When I went to change it it said that there was no icon for the program.
When I checked the program for that file there was an ico file but it was the
same white box, blue bare coloured dots. I tried a search to find the Windows
icon folder to see what was there and could not find it, but I may not have
searched the right place.' I am using Windows XP service pk 2

any help to fix the display would be appreciated. Thanks

Your IconCache size is probably too small for your needs. You will find an
entry to make larger in the registry. Deleting the hidden file
'IconCache.DB' may also help. Explorer builds a new one as needed.
