I can receive but not send email

I just updated Vista with the service pack 1. Ever since doing that, I
cannot send mail through Windows Mail, however, I can receive. Every time I
try to send a message I get an error that says:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Subject 'Re: Computer issues', Account: 'pop.charter.net',
Server: 'smtp.charter.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800CCC0F".

Any ideas?

Which antivirus are you running? Some of them are not compatible
with Windows Mail. The SP1 thing may be just a coincidence, or
it could have triggered your antivirus to act up.

I am using Trend Micro.

Several months ago, Trend Micro was added to the list of antivirus
products that do not work well with Windows Mail. As a test,
uninstall Trend Micro, reboot, then try Windows Mail again.
Please report back. If that test is successful, we can recommend
a couple of free antivirus products that are compatible.

That would be very bad since I just renewed my subscription with them. Trend
Micro was actually the antivirus software recommended to me when I bought my
computer from Best Buy last year (which had Vista as the OS). They even put
it on my computer right there at the store. I have not had any problems
what-so-ever until my recent update of the OS to the Vista SP1 (the reason I
updated was because my Adobe Reader had quit opening pdf files on the
Internet, which did solve THAT problem, by the way). Is there any other
suggestion you can give me other than uninstalling Trend Micro? The reason I
ask is that I'm not exactly sure how to reinstall it once it is gone since
everything originally came from a download off the Internet. Also, if I find
it is the anti-virus software, do you think there's any chance that I could
get a refund on my renewal I just paid for?

The companies that make the antivirus programs not fully compatible with
Windows Mail (Norton, McAfee, and Trend) tend to use extra money to
encourage computer makers and probably also computer sellers to include
their products, although often a trial version that won't keep running for a
full year.

It sometimes helps to remove your email account under Windows Mail, then
restart Windows Mail and add the account again, to get rid of any problems
the antivirus programs inserted in your account. If it works, though,
expect
such problems to return eventually, although often not for months.

So I update my system, and then spend hours finding out that hotmail and Tren
Micro visus checker have issues- Thank a lot Vista - what a waste of time

You could try emailing Trend Micro customer service and demanding
a refund. I did the same with Norton Antivirus five years ago, and got
them to refund my money. Many have a customer satisfaction guarantee.

But we're being premature. First you should ask their customer service
how you are supposed to reinstall. That scenario should be covered
because people do have hard drive crashes and similar events.

A quick fix that worked for me:

I found myself unable to send email via Windows Mail this afternoon. I have
Vista Home Premium and a three year subscription to TrendMicro PCCillin (not
something I would do again, even before this problem)

On a whim, I tried moving all the messages in my Outbox to my Drafts folder,
opening them up and sending them. It worked, at least for now. I did lose
the entire contents of the one message not easily reproduced.

Hope this limits somebody's frustration.

We can recommend a free, compatible antivirus if you need one.

Windows Live Mail will accommodate Hotmail. It is an easy
install since it imports everything from Windows Mail.

Windows Live Mail also seems to be more resistant to corruption
from overly aggressive antivirus products.

Thank you. I will try contacting Trend Micro. I saw in some other threads
that port 25 is sometimes blocked for outgoing mail. I noticed that is the
default on my account. Do you have another port number you recommend that I
try (keep in mind that I know nothing about these protocol things)?

First of all, the 'port 25 block' is an issue only for those who travel away
from home with a laptop.

Secondly, you can only use the ports that are offered by your mail provider.
Your ISP (Charter) is rather behind the times in that it only offers port 25
for SMTP.
