HP600 OfficeJet USB connection?

I have a new windows XP pro laptop and have bought a USB
to parallel printer conversion cable. Windows doesn't
agree that I have a printer connected... Any ideas?
 
I'm assumming here that the HP600 printer only has a parallel port on it....
it does not contain the correct information for the USB port to recognise
it. The USB has no idea what is trying to connect to it.
