How to turn off windows update alerts

I recently installed SP2, but have elected to turn off automatic updates.
Now every time I boot, I get the red shield icon and the dire warning that
the sky is going to fall if I don't reset the automatic updates. This is
reallllly irritating. There seems to be ways to turn off the warnings for
the antivirus and firewall alerts, but I can't find a way to turn of the
update warning alerts. Surely there is a way? Thanks.

Control Panel>Security Center
On the left menu there is an option to "Change the way Security Center
alerts me"
