"Constantly"? Are you over-stating or is there a problem with your computer
and some update is repeating over and over? (You can tell by noting the
KB###### of the updates being installed.)

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Using only your words and where you posted...

Turn off auto-update Windows XP
http://www.google.com/search?q=Turn+off+auto-update+Windows+XP

Which will lead you to:
How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Which has a section titled, "Turn off Automatic Updates"...

Which states:
"If you want to turn off the automatic updates, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select Turn off Automatic
Updates.
Click OK."

Come back, reply to this message... Let everyone know if it helped!

Constantly as in all day, every day or once a week or so like the rest of
us?

It can be turned off completely through Control Panel>Security Center but
not something I would recommend.

Shenan ... the only logical response is

Do you know which days of the month MS pushes out updates ?
Do you know when out-of-band security updates are pushed out ?

If anyone can answer both, then automatic updating can be *completely*
Disabled.
Otherwise AU should be set to " Notify me.. " or " Download updates for
me, but let me choose when to install ... " <w>

With all the crap that MS has been pushing out (hello Silverlight and
Live Essentials), Automatic (recommended) should be used only by those
who regularly image their systems or, are masochists.

Won't that just replace one annoying message with another annoying
message that Automatic Updates is turned off?

No. Not if you change the way Security Center alerts you (and also - I
don't recall the Security Center constantly bugging you other than the red
shield sitting there.)

One question at a time. ;-)

I don't disagree - thus my linking to the "How to configure and use
Automatic Updates in Windows XP" instead of something that just tells them
how to disable it.

Yes - I did include the instructions on how to disable it (which is one of
the last things in the KB article) - but that was done because I thought
that was what was requested and because I have found most people are
inherently lazy and I did not feel like getting the response of, "That
doesn't tell me how to turn off Automatic Updates" because they did not read
carefully or far enough into the article. ;-)

By changing the systems date/time. You are already on 1st December 2009
while the rest of us are still on 30th Nov 2009 even after adjusting for
the time difference. The idiot by the name of John John won't like it
because his knowledge of time zones is virtually zilt!

One question at a time.  ;-)

As soon as you disable it, you will get the message and the shield.

The red shield itself is annoying and something "new" that some folks
will not understand and find undesirable, generating additional Q&A.
The article doesn't warn you about the message or the new shield in
your Notification area.

Why stimulate needless back and forth Q&A with yet another link when
the next question is predictable.

It is +13 hours from EST to Japan (Okinawa) :)... I should not need
to know that.

I could counter with:
Why assume what the user may/may not know?

They may have actually realized what they needed to do next. They may click
on the message that pops up and read what it tells them they can do/explore
their options on their own. There may be no further Q&A.

The answer that was 'accepted' (or better yet - 'acknowledged') by the OP
was: "It can be turned off completely through Control Panel>Security Center
but not something I would recommend."

I wouldn't call that detailed and there are some users who will not know how
to get to the control panel - not to mention that even done in this manner,
one would still have to "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and
nothing like that was mentioned in the accepted/acknowledged answer. ;-)

What difference does it make whether you know or do not know when MS issues
updates
or out of band security updates. Anyone can turn off auto updates and block
the alert.
They should then, however, manually update once a week or so.
AU should be set to "Notify me" if you can't answer those questions is
ridiculous.

Bear in mind that the date and time you see in your newsreader is
*your* date and time, not the sender's. So it doesn't matter where he
is.
