I don't live in an area where high speed is an option, and my speed at best I
can't get is 26.4. I called my ISP and they said it is the quality of the
phone lines in the area. Is there anything I can do to speed this up or am I
done?

Try one of the newer 56k V92 modems. Same situation here but it gets me
46200.

My modem is only 5 yrs old, is that old? What brand do you recommend I run xp
home sp2?

Update Your MODEM DRIVERS

Check your PHONE LINE for Static and HUMS

For this TESt YOU CANNOT use a PORTABLE phone.. you must use a phone
that has no antenna and plugs into the wall , Portable Phones MASK the
HUM and STASTIC .

The first thing u do is TURN The Volume down on the TV .
pick up the Reciever.
listen for Dial tone.

Now PUSH #4

It Shud be REAL QUIET, No Buzzing , No Static
if you got Static or a BUZZ
And you have LINEBACKER .. Call The phone company and tell them your
Phone is NOISY ( NEVER MENTION INTERNET ACCESS or your Speed ,, if You
Do they will do NOTHING) Just tell them the noise is annoying .
if you donnot have linebacker, Then plug your phone into the Phone Box
on the side of your home and Repeat the TEST
if The noises are gone, Then the problem is WITHIN your home. and You
will be Charged by the hour to fix it.
But if The noise is There , Then it is The PHONE COMPANIES problem and
The will fix it For FREE !!

If the ISP already knows that the quality of the phone lines in you
neighborhood is poor, there's very probably nothing you more can do.
Dial-up connection speeds are very dependent upon the quality of the
phone lines.

There is not a piece of PC equipment in my office 2 years old. Yes, a 5 year
old modem is old. If your ISP knows the phone lines are noisy in your area
there is nothing to do but move or go satellite. There is a possibility the
phone company will send a lineman out and hunt you a cleaner line. They did
for me a few years ago.

Unfortunately, it also depends on the Telephone Co. supplier.
Many only guarantee to supply phone quality (fine print.)

I'm also interested in the comment "speed at best I can't get is 26.4"

I don't know where this figure came from, but it sounds like a M-bit no. =
3.3M-byte.

That sounds to me like an old 28.8 modem, so I I suggest borrowing a 56.6
modem from a friend ( there must be stacks lying around doing nothing these
days) and see what sort of figure can be achieved.

Note to Stacey -
Modems are branded as M-bits/sec., not m-bytes, (so a 28.8 is actually only
about 3.3 M-byte/sec), you need to divide the modem speed by 8 to work out
what the transfer speed really is.
Under good telephone exchange conditions, a 28.8 MB modem will give you at
best, a download speed of a bit over 3 (M-bytes/sec.).
The 56.6 one can give you up to 6.5 (M-Bytes) depending on the phone
lines/exchanges it has to pass through & whether the exchanges still have
some old analogue circuitry in there, or have been fully converted to
digital switching.

** Another interesting experiment to try first is to disconnect every phone
in the house before you connect to the internet, as some brands divert part
of the signal from the modem, occasionally to the point where it will
eventually drop your connection completely.

In my case, I ordered a new phone line and told them in advance it was for a
computer line. They 1st balked about checking it out until they went back
and listened to the tape on the order.

I was getting even worse at around 19.2 with a 56k modem!!

Hello, The other posters have given good info. I have a poor
connection(26.4) found that using a older external modem increased the
connection (31.2) sometimes higher, increased my download ability. Have new
internal and external modem's both rarely are able to connect at 28.8. I
think the newer modems are designed to seek a steady connection which are
always lower,(with a poor connection), ie: 26.4. Few ideas, clean all you
line connections make sure they are tight. If possible before going online
disconnect telephones if you can't make sure the connections are tightly
seated. When connected with 26.4 disconnect then redial sometimes the modem
will connect at a higher speed. If you can find a 56k v.90 serial version
for Windows 95,98. I found one with a Intel chipset, plug and play for $
14.95 U.S., from a sub contractor for Prime Peripherals. I have both the
internal and external connected , I switch to the one that connects at the
best speed. Then check the download ability.I use a dbl. wall connector and
use two lines from one connection in order for both modems to be connected
then I can switch by choosing modems with a shortcut on the desktop. One is
set as a default. When downloading I do nothing online except the download.
For a long shot you could inquire of your ISP if they are setup for a dual
modem connection which may increase the connection link.
Take Care.
beamish.

Here we go again.
You mentioned 19.2!
Where did you get this figure from - some 3rd. party monitoring software?
All downloads give figures at a given time in "M-Bytes" not "M-bits" - which
varies up and down every few seconds depending on the Server loading.
I do assume we're discussing phoneline modems, not DSL?

How about satellite? Cable? You can't really do much about poor quality land
lines.

19.2k on a 56K modem is what he is saying
I would reckon he is reading the first connect speed on the two little
pc icon on right hand side otf win95/98 start bar./
He is a dial up not a adsl line where Kb is what one gets not Mb
Freda

Sorry, you lost me somewhere.
This an XP group, not win95/98.
I just asked why a few posters are supplying 'bit' instead of 'byte' nos.,
for whenever you download something like an app., the download is usually
rated at real-time K-byte speed; - where you got Mb from, I have no idea.
Modems are rated on the box as K-bit speeds, not K-byte, as it sounds faster
& is just a selling point.

You kept saying Mb in your earliere postings!!!!
He kept saying Kb and you kept saying where did he get this from!!!!!!

Thanx for all the help this is great, I checked and I do have a 56k v90
modem, there is no static on the line and with all the phones diconnected it
is still the 26.4 speed dial up.

Thanx for all the help this is great. I checked and I do have a 56k v 90

satalite they told me unless I own an apartment building it wouldn't be worth
it

You should get almost double that. Try another modem if you can borrow one,
if you have the same result, put some pressure on your Phone Co.
A slight drop in speed is acceptable, but only 50% is definitely not.
Another option is a 2nd. phone line.
If you get nowhere, insist on speaking to the Supervisor, as that's below
guaranteed phone quality - that usually gets results, also get them to
thoroughly check the line (a full test) from the exchange to your home.
