How to reformat Win XP Home Edition

Mirabel

MY OS is WIn XP home Edition.

I am recently experiencing some problems with my pc eg
frequent hanging, IE unable to close etc. I am unsure
whether this is caused by a virus but anyway, I've
decided to reformat my pc. However, I am not sure how I
can go abt it. I checked the knowledge database but did
not find anything there. Can anyone advise me on this? By
the way, I want a thorough cleanup i.e. removing my
current version and not just run the Win XP CD to 'cover'
my existing version.

After I reformat my pc, does my pc install all published
hot fixes so far or only those available from this pt
onwards?

Lastly, fyi, my OS was already installed when I purchased
my pc. I have with me though, the back up disks to use
for reinstallation in case my OS crash.

Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
If you are installing using Windows XP Upgrade, insert qualifying
media in Step 4b.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

If you have a real XP CD and not just restore disks, you can follow the
steps in the link below.
If you only have restore disks, then you will need to consult your
manufacturer for information on how to reinstall.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
Click on or copy and paste the link below into your web browser address bar.

To keep your system logical, try system restore. Take it
back to the day you purchased it where all is new again.
About the IE hanging, try uninstalling IE from Add or
Remove Program. Re-formatting may need to be done by a
professional unless you have the skills or talent to do so
without a major combustion of programs stepping on one
another. Read The owners manual for further review !
