HOW TO INSTALL SP2 Successfully.

I have been watching this NG for since SP2 came out on Aug 16th. I have
monitored and filed just about everyone's problems and solutions. I
ordered the SP2 CD as I have Dial-up. It's long and may be a little
anal retentive, but it worked for me:

PROCESS PRIOR TO INSTALLING SP 2

First go here to make sure you don’t have a program that will stall SP2:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2

Next: Update Anti-Virus, AdAware, Spybot, Spybuster, CWShredder, Startup
Cop, HiJackThis,etc.

-Clear Cookies and Temp files and History from IE. Close IE

-Copy Favorites and Address book to floppies. Copy My Pictues to a CD

-Clear un-necessary messages from OEX folders. Empty ‘Deleted Items’
folder

- Click ‘Work Offline’, Close OEX. Click File/Folders/Compact All
Folders. Click View/Layout/Folders. Close OEX.

Run Anti-Virus, AdAware, SpyBot, SpyBuster, CW Shredder, Add/Remove
Utility, HijackThis, etc

-Run ChkDsk.

-Run WinXP native Disk Clean.

-Backup Registry with Erunt.

- Run Search for *.BAK/*.FTS/*.GID./*JBF./*.SHS./*.TMP and delete

- Run NTREGopt registry optimizer. Reboot.

Run CHKDSK

-Run Defrag.

-Run security check from Gibson website

-Run Symantic Security from website

-Set Appearances to ‘Default’, Set ‘Fonts’ to Normal.

-Run complete backup of WinXP operating system. (I use Acronis 6-True
Image).

Shut down. DISCONNECT ANYTHING CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER, INCLUDING THE
PHONE JACK FOR THE MODEM!

Reboot. Run CHKDSK again.

CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT !

Reboot and run SP2 Disk. Follow on screen instructions. Shut down.

-Take a break. Cross you fingers and Reboot.

If you have a Firewall that you prefer; Click Control Panel/Security
Center/Firewall/Recommendations. Click ‘I have a firewall, etc.

OR drop down to ‘Manage Security Settings For’ and turn off SP2
Firewall.

SP2 should tell you what Anti-Virus program you have installed.

Follow Alex Nichol’s for clean-up when you find that everything is
working ok.

Make sure you create a Restore Point!

SP2 creates its own. If the install goes wrong in such a way that that
is not useful, earlier ones will not be either

Do not know if this was previously mentioned.

Check and clear out sspyware programs. Use Ad Aware SE and Spybot: Search
and Destroy 1.3. Some spyware have been known to block upgrades/updates to
programs.

Check for viruses and remove any you encounter.

Turn out automatic anti-virus protection DURING the install of the upgrade.
The automatic ant-virus protection MAY block the ugrade during the file
update process.

Also uninstall any applications that can't be updated and you have the
CD's for. Anything from Scan Disc could be a problem. Like Omni-Page
and Textbridge Pro............Dingo

You forgot the ttwwoo most important items.

1. Run your mfg disk diagnositc checks.

2. Convert your file / system to NTFS (which would reoder some of your items
and the chkdsk /r needs to be done from the Recovery Console according to MS
documentation. But I think that is the same as drive properties, tools,
check disk, and checking booth boxes, then a reboot to get it going. BUT, if
there is a problem the system may not boot again so it is better to do it in
R C. Becuse you can do other things to fix what may be wrong with the files.

If the disk is bad, there isn't any use in installing anything.
