Have a laptop with XP built into a recovery partition on the disk, no CD
available. Need to enter recovery console and was wondering how to do it
via the I386 files on disk. Is it possible? If so would you please
explain how?

TIA

Hi Mark

Thanks for the post!
Found another way to make the recovery console a permanent recovery
option for your boot menu (if you use one). This option installs all
recovery console files necessary to your HDD (about 8mb) and adds the
option to your BOOT.INI.

The catch is you need a MS installation CD for whatever flavor of XP you
are using, i.e.. PRO users must borrow a PRO CD (SP1 CD will not work
with SP3, tried it), users with HOME must borrow a HOME CD.

I now have a permanent option for booting to recovery console on the
HDD; pretty cool!

Borrow another bootable XP CD. For this purpose, any one will do, Home or
Pro.

I wanted to post to this thread as my problem is about the same. The XP Pro disk that I have is from 2005 and Windows has been updated many times via the automatic internet updates. I had never installed the Recovery Console, apparently and want to do so now. But I get the following message when I follow the posted procedures in this thread:

Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.

Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is
currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be
recovered.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest you don't install the Recovery Console. :)

Actually, I'm serious. On those rare occasions you need to use it, just
boot off the CD and use the Recovery Console from there.

If you absolutely must install it, create a slipstreamed installation CD
so that it matches the Service Pack level of what's on your hard drive
(SP3, I would presume). The new installation CD would be handy also if
you ever needed to peform a Repair Install.

Fo info on slipstreaming, see:

An alternative is to use a program like AutoStreamer or nLite to
automate the process.

You need to create a new XP CD with SP3 added via Slipstreaming.
