how long do posts stay up for?

Hi,

Stupid question, but does anyone know how long these posts stay up for? I
posted a query yesterday and I got some advice which looked promising, but
now I've come back to try it out, my post is nowhere to be seen!

Cheers,

Mark

Depends how you're accessing I assume the web interface will show less then
then OE would. But places like Google archive the lot.

You can search back previous posts in this group by using
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&hl=en
although there is a delay of several hours using Google.

They are retained for 60 or 90 days - according to different sources. You
however are posting via the web application - which is clunky, cumbersome
and unreliable. Why not set up your Outlook Express to use the newsgroups
and enjoy the benefits of accessing the newsgroups easily and requesting
support or offering it - cleanly?

Microsoft keep things on the servers for 60 days. But the Web interface
you are using is notorious for people being unable to find their posts
in the thousand a day that are made on this group. Try using Outlook
Express (or other true newsreader), setting up a New account to the
server msnews.microsoft.com then subscribing to groups of interest.
Once you have got an initial ration of 300 messages, use its Tools -
Options - Read and uncheck the Get 300 at a time; then on each occasion
it will get all the messages posts since your last visit

Others have given you advice regarding the use of Outlook Express for
accessing newsgroup messages rather than the web based interface.

Here is an additional tip that will make it even easier for you to
locate your own posts and the responses to them.

In Outlook Express select Tools - Message Rules - News
In the News Rules windows click on the New... button
In the "1. Select the conditions for your rule" box click on the
checkbox for the line "Where the From line contains people" and then
in the Rule Description section click on the underlined link "contains
people". Type the email address that you used in your newsgroup
account in the upper box, then click on Add and then on OK.
In the "2 select the Actions for your rule" box click on the checkbox
for "Mark the message as watched or ignored", then click on the
underlined link "watch or ignore" in the Rule Description section. A
popup box will appear. Make sure the "Watch message" item is selected
and then click on OK.
Now in the "2 select the Actions for your rule" also select the
checkbox for "Stop processing more rules".

The Rule description box should now read:
Apply this rule after the message arrives.
Where the message contains (the email address you use when posting to
newsgroups)
Mark the message as watched
and Stop processing more rules.

Click on OK to accept this new rule.

Now whenever Outlook Express receives a message that you have posted
it will place a "watch thread" flag on that message which means that
your message and all replies to it will be shown in red text in the
message list. Makes them extremely easy to find.

Good luck
