How do you remove firewalls that dont exist?

P

Paul

Howdy all,

On the other PC here, ZA is installed on it.

However, when I shut ZA down, in security centre, it says there's more than
1 firewall installed, but none are turned on (well, obviously coz I just
turned it off)!

And XP SP2's firewall isnt turned on.

There is NO other firewall installed, besides Zonealarm.

Symantec's firewall USED to be installed, but has now been removed. I even
used the removal tools to make sure. It used to have AVG + firewall, and the
PC-Cillin firewall installed, but these have also been removed.

I have also removed entries related to any other firewall in the registry.

So, any ideas on where XP is getting its info from, why its saying more than
1 firewall is still installed??

I think you answered your own question. ZA is a firewall, and XP has its
own. That's two.

P

Paul

Well, like I said when I kill ZA, XP's isnt on.

It's off. So, it wont be XP's firewall. If its off.

I can disable ZA on this PC, and XP's firewall is off.

And security centre will say there are no firewalls
installed.

You asked a message saying two were installed. Installed does not mean
"running", Paul. Check the message again. Is it actually saying "installed"?

P

Paul

OK. The exact message is:

Windows found more than one firewall installed, but no firewall is turned
on.

Click recommendations to learn how to fix this problem.

For the firewall entry. However, on this PC, it says ZA has been turned off.
Which is what the other PC should say, but doesnt.

And under the Virus protection entry in security centre, (on the other PC),
it says whats its meant to.

ZA Security Suite AV reports that it is turned off.

I have a feeling that it has something to do with

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring

There's 14 entries here. Can I delete all but ZA here??

Anyone know?

Paul, can't you just keep this simple, and believe what people are telling
you? You have two firewalls. The one that's part of SP2, and ZoneAlarm. Poke
around in Control Panel and make sure the Windows firewall is shut off.
Then, make sure ZoneAlarm is turned on. Then, go for a walk, and ignore
whatever messages you see from Windows.

P

Paul

So, why does it say 2 different messages on 2 different pc's??

Tell me that?.

I know I have 2 firewalls. BUT one is off.

And XP says ZA is turned off, on this PC which is what it SHOULD say.

Whereas the other says there's more than
1 firewall (when XP's firewall is OFF on the other PC)??

It SHOULD say the same thing. (That ZA is turned off).

If not, why not.

Obviously, I'm talking to someone who doesnt know the answer either.

I'll wait for someone who knows the answer to reply.

Later.

I would say it's best not to... I have 14 in there as well.

Those entries are not dependent on whether that manufacturer's software
is installed. I don't think removing them will help but if you choose
to do so, first export the registry key in case some thing goes wrong,
or better yet use ERUNT to backup the registry and know how to recover
the backup copy.

P

Paul

Ok. Thanx guys.

Well I used regseeker, and did a search for Symantec. I deleted those
entries lol. It made no diff whatsoever...

I would say wherever the info is, XP is looking for isnt in the registry, or
the hdd.

So, buggered if I know where its getting the idea, that there's more than 1
firewall installed!

Going by your first post you have a total of four firewalls that you know of
installed at one time or another. You may have had more. Many antivirus
programs silently install worm protection or something similar that is
actually a firewall. One of more of the programs you installed didn't
uninstall properly and is causing the weird reporting of the firewall
status. It appears that Zone Alarm is working as you can turn it on and off.
I wouldn't worry about the reporting. If you really want to fix it back up
your registry then search though it for entries for all the firewalls you
have had installed. I'd suspect Norton left something. Their removal process
even with the standalone removal programs rarely removes everything.

Or, reformat & reinstall. It sounds like his computer resembles the junk
drawer many people have in their kitchens - the drawer full of old scissors,
rubber bands, keys that don't open anything we can remember, and lint.

Geez, you're dumber than a stack of bricks, aren't you. You just admitted
you had 2 firewalls installed, so what's the problem? Maybe you just don't
understand the English language? It doesn't matter whether the firewall is
"turned on" or not - it's installed and that is what Windoze is telling
you.

running Windoze again. Of course, I wouldn't allow it to access the
Internet. Windoze has no place on the Internet.

Thanx for the info there Kerry.

You've been the only person, who has replied
with a normal answer lol.

I'll forget the other guy/s who have replied.

Obviously, they dont understand English. Or know what I mean.

lol.

Nah rather not format. Its a PC I built for the flatmate, (a women). Need I
say more?

I'll never hear the end of it, if she comes back from work, and finds I
formatted the system.

I have a feeling it has something to do with Symantec.

As after I uninstalled their firewall, no symantec entries appeared in
Add/remove, but one appeared in ccleaner (under tools/uninstall).. This has
since been removed tho.

Oh well, I'll see what else I can find.

Why? If reformatting is done right, the machine can be indistinguishable
from its previous state, except that it may run better. However, this is not
a fast, easy process.
