Windows Xp Home Edition was preinstalled. I don't have have a copy.
I've been stuck in safemode with networking for 2 months. Black screen
on boot on normal mode.

I have a copy of windows 98. But it was never installed in this
computer.
WinXP was not an upgrade over Win98.

The simplest way is to reformat the C partition, this will delete XP. Then
install Win98. Since I have not install Windows 98 in a long time I'm not
sure if you will be given the option to reformat when you start the Win98
install process.
Note: If your are using NTFS for XP then you must reformat as FAT32, FAT32
is limited to a 32GB partition size.

The quickest way would be to create a boot disc and format the hard
drive....make sure you backup all of your critical data ( such as personal
files, email, favorites etc. ) before formating.

In your case, you will need to do a clean install of Win98.

Boot the computer with a Win98 boot disk. Use fdisk to delete the XP
partition and create a new one. Use Format to format the drive FAT32.
Use a boot disk that has cd-rom drivers on it. With Win9x, if there is
enough room on the drive I like to create a Win9x (Win98 in your case)
folder on C: and copy the cd contents to it. Then install from the hard
drive. So, assuming you've created and formatted your partition/drive
and booted with the boot disk:

c:\mkdir win98 [enter]
d:\[enter] {assumes cd-rom drive is d:}
d:\copy win98 c:\win98 [enter]
{when files are finished copying}
c:\[enter]
c:\cd win98 [enter]
c:\win98\setup [enter]

Go through the Win98 install and afterwards install drivers, programs,
etc.

Naturally you understand that everything currently on the
drive/partition will be gone.

Contact the seller and get the xp cd. You need it and you are entitled to
receive it with a new computer. You will not be able to get drivers for all
the new hardware with Win 98 and you'll regret trying to install it. Win 98
is no longer a supported operating system after June 2006 and it is not legal
to install the operating system on a diff computer. You might also void your
warranty on the new computer.

Rather than downgrade to 98, which will soon lose support, find out what the
problem is and repair your XP. Contact the seller, and get the CD you had
coming when you bought the computer in the first place, unless it's an OEM,
then get the restore disk you were supposed to get.

What errors do you get when trying to boot in normal mode? Post them here,
and I'm sure someone can tell you what to do to fix the problem.

I think it crashed due to several downloads of online monstertruck
games for my little nephew. Since then, everytime I boot normally, I
get a black screen after the windows splash logo thing. Everything
seems to be running in the background. I ran virus scan but nothing was
detected. I've tried all the options listed upon pressing f8, nothing
has resolved anything. I know it's insane to downgrade but I'm losing
my patients.

Thanks for the response.

Like it's been said contact the vendor of your PC and ask for the CD.
Who is the vendor?

I would avoid formatting and installing windows 98 and I can't believe only a
couple people told you not to do so! Before making a HUGE mistake try these
steps, !!!

Have you tried running system restore from Safe mode? To do so go to start
All programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > select a date
prior to these last two months when you've been stuck in safe mode and run
the restore process. If that doesn't work boot back into safe mode open up
my computer go to your c: drive and look for an i386 folder if you have one
click start > run > sfc /scannow. If neither work get back with us and there
are a couple of other steps you can do if you have the i386 folder. Also you
may have a recovery partition on your hard drive and I know if it's an hp or
a compaq when your computer is booting you can tap f10 to start the recovery
process. Get back with us and let us know.

Did all you suggested. Found the i386 folder. On run, could not find
"sfc/scannow". Tapped f10 for recovery-only brought me back to black
screen.

I do have hp.
amd athlon xp 3000+
2.16 ghz 448 mb of ram
system: microsfot windows xp home edition
version:2002
service pack 2

thanks for the reply.

Whether you pay now or pay later, you are going to go to Xp. The difference
is how much time you spend. A Xp upgrade may work ($80.00) or full boat Xp
home ($200.00)

As has been mentioned, the mfg. of the computer should give you a disk.

Then contact HP for the replacement Recovery Disks. It will cost you
around $25USD and be worth it. I misunderstood your first post and
thought you *wanted* Win98.

Most HP computers have a "D" recovery partition.

Hey,

You don't and won't find sfc /scannow in run you have to click start > click
run > then type sfc /scannow into the open box with a space between sfc and
/scannow. It being an HP like the other person said there should be a D
partition called the recovery partition. If there is then you will have a
recovery option at startup when you first turn on the computer keep your eyes
open and look for it to say f10 = system recovery and you need to tap f10
over and over during the entire boot right after you hit your power button
not just when it is loading windows. If neither of those work then you
should order the cd's but if you can't afford it or you just don't want to
spend the money then having the i386 folder on your drive we can do a repair
install with that... let me know

That's what I did! Start then run sfc/scannow. F10 did nothing-Just
sent me back to a black screen. I did solve the issue, though. I rolled
back the adapter driver on display properties while in VGA Mode. It was
running on via/s3g unichrome igp, so I changed it to via/s3g
km400/kn400. I do however have one annoying problem that pops up on
startup, something to do with a cd software that may make my system
unstable, so the drivers have been disabled. Can't seem to get rid of
it. But Windows is booting normally now, and I'm complacent with that.

Thanks for your suggestions.
salut.
