Windows Xp Home Edition was preinstalled. I don't have have a copy.
I've been stuck in safemode with networking for 2 months. Black screen
on boot on normal mode.

I have a copy of windows 98. But it was never installed in this
computer.
WinXP was not an upgrade over Win98.

If Windows XP was pre-installed it cannot be uninstalled. You'll need to
erase your hard disk and then install Windows 98 and all your other software
from scratch. However, you may want to bear the following in mind:

Windows 98 may not have drivers for all your hardware devices, and drivers
for Windows 98 may not exist.

Some of the software that came with your computer may not work with Windows
98. You will have to buy Windows 98-compatible versions of your software, if
they exist.

Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft. That means, among other
things, no security updates.

Windows XP is a much more secure and stable OS than Windows 98.

All in all, it would make more sense to resolve your problem(s) with Windows
XP.

Yea, it is insane to downgrade...

I've been in safe mode with networking, everytime I boot normally my
screen is black. Things seem to be running in the background. Did virus
scan and it detected nothing. f8 with listed options didn't resolve a
thing. Any idea how I might fix this, again, I haven't acquired a winxp
cd, I know how that limits possibilties.

Thanks.

No recovery disks or recovery partition from the hardware vendor?
Perhaps you should contact the vendor for advice. Vendors are supposed
to supply some means of at least getting your computer back to its
originally shipped condition.

As was said in your multi post contact your supplier and demand the wincd or
recovery cd
