On my notebook i have installed WIN XPSP2 on partotion C(NTFS). Then I have
created partition E on the same hard disk(D is CD drive), and format it to
FAT32 situable for instalation of WIN 98.
The problem for me is how to install WIN 98 to E drive, without deleting WIN
XP, and with boot menu to choose which operating system want to use. I need
to install WIN 98 for diagnostic software of some old devices that won´t work
on WIN XP.
I was thinking to solve this problem in next steps:
- create an image of operating system(image of WIN XP) on NTFS file system
with some backup and image creating software
- format C partition to FAT 32 file system
- install first WIN 98 on C partition
- restore image of WIN XP (which is created in NTFS) to E drive which is on
FAT 32
Is it possible to do it, and will the image of WIN XP work on FAT 32 system?
The crucial thing is to maintain the WIN XP on it original state because of
many software installed on it.
Can you please help me to solve this problem with some suggestions?
I would be thankful

It would be far better to install a proper boot manager, e.g. XOSL. It can
reside in its own small partition (15 MBytes, primary or logical) at the far
end of the disk. You could then use it to invoke WinXP on its NTFS partition
and Win98 on its FAT partition. Best to practise with a spare disk in order
to familiarise yourself with this free tool.

Firstly, can I ask why on earth you would want Windows 98 in the first
place?

As I have mention it in my post earlier i need to install WIN 98 because WIN XP doesn´t support any diagnostics and parametrization software i need for some old gas measuring devices on my work.
That devices are more than 10 years old and their software doesn´t work
under XP,, but only on 98.

He already answered that.
I feel for him. We had to leave a WinNT server set up to run our plotting
software since it wouldn't run on Windows Server 2003, Win2000, or WinXP and
the company didn't feel the need to fork out the bucks to buy newer
software. Eventually before I retired, they did, and made life much easier
for IT (in that respect anyhow :-) ).

Nope, you will need a boot manager as you can't switch XP to "E" and
have it work anymore. Both Operating systems will be running off of
their "C" drive. XP will see the Win98 partition as e or d as you may
choose but Win98 won't see XP as it is NTFS.

xp has been out for many
years now and considering
to install win98 at this time
is a bit late in the game if
that specialty soft ware was
needed.

however, you can virtualize
win98 with virtual pc or virtual
box.

this program will create a
dedicated environment in
xp for other o.s.'s like win98.

however, it is unclear if
the specialty software can
utilize xp drivers and you
can't install win98 hard ware
drivers in a virtual pc.

If I remember right...Really enjoyed Win98SE. If "E" is formated Fat32. When
you install 98 from a boot to CD. It will see the Fat 32 drive but NOT the
NTFS. drive. So to the 98 install disk Your "E" drive will be the "C" drive.
If the "E" drive is a different size then your NTFS "C" drive then you should
see that 98 is trying to load to the proper drive. Also your/a XP OS install
CD should have an option to install another OS on a different partition. Hope
this helps?

Interesting. The OP's WinXP boot goes like this:
1. The BIOS passes control to the MBR of the primary master disk.
2. The MBR passes control to NTLDR on the active NTFS partition.
If you can explain how to pass control over to the Win98 boot files on the
FAT32 partition then I'd love to test this for myself. Please post a set of
actual working instructions (i.e. a tried and proven method), not just some
educated guess.

.
Go into MB BIOS.
Set boot sequence in BIOS to CD drive that has win98 CD in it to first.
Save and exit out of BIOS.
The machine should boot to the 98 install CD.
Select the partition that is fat 32.(He said it was "E".) But since,I guess,
the other drives/partitions are NTFS. The only partition the 98CD should see
is the Fat32 partition.
Follow the install instructions. Watch the progress window. The machine
will need to reboot. Once it is complete and reboot. Go back into bios and
change Boot sequence back to original. When it boots it should ask you which
OS to boot to.
But like I said on the XP CD. There is an option to install another OS.
Boot to the XP CD like I said for the 98 instasll.
Or From XP help
file:-------------------------------------------------------------------
"How to create a multiple-boot system with MS-DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 98,
and Windows XP

You will be less likely to encounter problems installing a multiple-boot
system with MS-DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 98, and Windows XP if you install
these operating systems in the following order: MS-DOS, Windows 95 or Windows
98, and then Windows XP.

If you have Windows XP installed on a volume formatted as FAT, and you have
another free volume formatted as FAT or FAT32, you can install Windows 98 to
the free volume without reformatting your hard drive.

After ensuring that your hard drive is formatted with the correct file
system, do one of the following:

If you want a multiple-boot system with MS-DOS, Windows 95 or Windows 98,
and Windows XP, install MS-DOS, then Windows 95 or Windows 98, and then
Windows XP.
If you want a dual-boot system with only Windows 95 or Windows 98, install
Windows 95 or Windows 98, and then install Windows XP.
Important

Before creating a multiple-boot configuration with Windows XP and another
operating system, such as MS-DOS, Windows 95, or Windows 98, review the
following precautions:

Each operating system must be installed on a separate volume. Microsoft does
not support installing multiple operating systems on the same volume.
If you have only one volume on your computer, you must reformat and
repartition your hard drive to contain multiple volumes before you begin
creating a multiple-boot configuration, unless you are simply installing
another copy of Windows XP.
You cannot install both Windows 95 and Windows 98 in a multiple-boot
configuration. Windows 98 is intended as an upgrade to Windows 95 and will
try to use the same boot file.
You must install Windows XP only after installing MS-DOS, Windows 95, or
Windows 98 to prevent MS-DOS or Windows 95 from overwriting the Windows XP
boot sector and the Windows XP startup files.
Do not install Windows XP on a compressed drive that was not compressed
using the NTFS compression utility.
You must use a different computer name for each operating system if the
computer is on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP secure domain. "
It's been awhile but I know I have done this. Beause I had XP and installed
98SE
after XP. But the problem I had was the hardware was too new for 98 to work
with them or have correct drivers. And most Mfgs don't offer drivers for 98
anymore.
Another thing I did,on another PC, was unplug the XP HD and plug in another
HD and installed 98SE on it. After that hooked them together on ribbon cable
but installed two toggle switches to ,while PC is off, turn one off and the
other on. Then turn PC back on and it will boot to the HD that has the power
to it.
I used two toggles because that is what I had. I am sure a person can get
a toggle switch that has enough poles to switch from one to the other without
having the posibility of haveing both on at the same time.
I believe it would be a '12 pole/ single throw'.
I do know this works. But as I said before 98 does not work on PCs that are
new.
Or has a LCD/Plasma moniter. There are no drivers available that I could
find.
Hope this helps?

Sorry...
I read the post again. He has a notebook. The second HD option would not be
feasible on a notebook.

*** Agreed.

change Boot sequence back to original. When it boots it should ask you
which
OS to boot to.
*** No, it does not. It will boot straight into Win98.

*** I recommend you test your recipe before publishing it.
