Download/run Everest Home Edition(Free):
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html

http://basconotw.mvps.org/dwnlds.htm

Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to
that folder.
Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.

Next:
Click the + next to Computer.
Click Summary.
Right click in the right pane and in the popup menu click “Copy Allâ€.
Start a response in this thread.
Right click in the text window and in the popup menu click “Pasteâ€.
Send the response.

You'd be foolish to do as brian suggests...Usually with audio,if listed in
device
mgr,expand the sound tree,locate the hardware,R.click on it,select
uninstall,do
not restart computer,exit device mgr,shutdown computer,power off.If you have
a pci sound card, move card to diffrent pci slot, power up,xp will
reconfigure and
reinstall it...If its onboard,do the same but w/o pci slot,xp reinstalls
also.After,
you can run in windows drivers,or download them from mfg web site only....

Your response shows the difference between someone who has been through the jungle and one who hasn't. Device drivers that have been installed more than once will still show as installed in Safe Mode, no matter how many times you believe you uninstalled them. These duplicate devices shown in Safe Mode can and will cause driver conflicts.

In your suggested response, any previous device drivers that are/may be corrupt, have a very high potential of corrupting any new device driver installs if not removed in a proper way.

ALWAYS remove ANY/ALL devices in Safe Mode listed in DM under the suspect device category to ensure a clean device driver install.

This would depend on why you have no sound - and whether you've ever had
sound before. Have any of the system or soundcard mixer inputs/outputs got
muted in the mixer panel? Are the soundcard drivers marked with an
exclamation-mark in 'System Properties ... Device Manager ... Hardware'?
Check those things first before thinking about reloading drivers - it could
be something very simple.

By the way, which CDs r u talking about (the ones that came

If the soundcard circuitry is built into the motherboard (i.e. is
'onboard'), you'd use the motherboard driver disk to reload the sound
driver - BUT you'd make sure before starting that onboard sound is (still)
enabled in the BIOS settings.

If the soundcard is a separate item fitted to an expansion slot, you'd
use whatever CD the soundcard's makers supplied with it. It cuold be
labelled 'Creative Soundblaster', 'Dazzle', 'Crystal', 'Voyetra' or
something similar and have a clear 'soundcard' label marked on it.

Good luck -

Philip
