problem with sound card / drivers

My 3 yr old DELL Dimension 8300 worked fine until a few days ago: I suddently
lost the sound. DxDiag shows "no sound card", but under Control Panel -
Devices - Properties the sound card SB Live! Series shows up as installed and
active. Under "drivers" it says "driver activated but not started" (in
German) - what does this mean ?
I have de-installed the complete Sound Blaster software and re-installed it
from the CD. I have tried downloading the most current driver from the
website - nothing helps.

With an error from DXDIAG, I would be tempted to take a shot at simply
reinstalling the video drivers.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the video device, Action
menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again
automatically.
