Lost Sound

After having worked fine under XP SP3, sound has vanished completely. This
happened a few weeks ago, and I am not sure exactly what update I might have
installed at the time.

I believe the hardware--a Dell 8300 with an Audigy 2 sound card--is OK,
because sound works fine when I boot to another OS.

I have used the troubleshooter built into XP to no avail.

I tried to update the date the driver for the Audigy 2, but get the message
that the existing driver is up to date.

Per another thread in this forum, I have tried to install the latest DirectX
runtime components (though I'd be amazed if DirectX had anything to do with
the problem), but I repeatedly get the message "Setup could not download the
file. Plreas retry later or check network connection."

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could try Uninstalling the Audigy Software and also
uninstalling the Sound Card from Device Manager. Restart and let Windows
reinstall the Card. Then reinstall the Software. Or, you might be able to do
a System Restore to a point before those Updates were installed.
