Hi I hope someone can help me on this one because it is driving me nuts
pardon the punn! I recently re-formatted my hardrive and as far as i know
installed all relevant drivers. i am on windows xp and have a (CMI8738/C3DX)
PCI Audio device But when i came to use the sound I didnt get any. So checked
the devices and drivers and it came up with no sound device installed so took
computer to bits took out sound card and then put it back. when rebooted
computer said found new hardware. So obviously it had somehow become
disconnected. So let new hardware wizard install driver but when it got so
far through the file download my system froze completely and had to turn it
off. I tried again and it did the same thing again. I have now uninstalled
the driver from the programs menu. But dont know why it is doing this .
please can someone help me thank you.

What caused you to reformat the drive and reinstall the OS? If you were
having system stability problems, what were they and what steps had you
taken to resolve them before reformatting the drive and reinstaling the OS?

Have you tried installing a known good working soundcard in your PC to
verify if yours has gone South or not?

Have you tried the card in a different PCI slot to verify if the the
problem is or is not related to the slot it's installed in?

In Device Manager > Sound, Video and Game Controllers, is your device
listed? If yes, right click on the device and click Properties in the popup
menu.
Under the General tab what is the status of the device?
Under the Resources tab (if present) are there any reported conflicts with
any other devices?

If your motherboard has integrated/onboard audio, have you tried disabling
the integrated/onboard audio to verify if it is the cause of the issue or
not?
