I can't get out of Safe Mode, and I am not sure how I got in it in the first
place. I have tried re-starting, F8, start>run>msconfig>boot.ini>uncheck
safemode, and quite a few other things.

Has anyone faced this problem and succesfully fixed it?

Grateful for help!

You can run your antivirus and anti-malware programs from Safe Mode. You can
also use System Restore in Safe Mode to roll back to a point in time before
the problem started. Otherwise, based on the amount of detail you provided,
you might have to consider a repair install or even a clean install.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried the system restore, but no luck.
Unfortunately, my install CD is in another state.

here's my boot.ini
ensure no references to safeboot

(heh, in w98 msdos.sys it was bootsafe)

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Try this.

Start | Run | Type: msconfig | Click OK |

UNSelect: /SAFEBOOT under the boot.ini tab | Click Apply |
Under the General tab Select: Normal Startup - load all device drivers and
services | Click Apply and Close
