There is malicious software that notices changes made via msconfig -
especially adding the /SAFEBOOT option and when it notices changes,
your system will never boot again in any kind of mode - from the hard
disk... The malicious software thinks you are trying to remove it and
it does not want to be removed so it tries to stop you from doing
so.

Most malicious software is happiest when it succeeds in making you
think you have to reinstall XP, but you don't have to do all that.

You must boot on something to maneuver - in your case it sounds like
you might need a bootable USB device that will boot the XP Recovery
Console.

Once you have RC loaded you can fix your system.

Did your system come with any kind of bootable media - like a flash
card or USB memory stick? If not, you will be wanting to make one for
just such an emergency.

You do not need any media - you can download what you need create
something on a working system, then boot your netbook on that and be
on your way.

I Googled "netbook" and got 36 million hits (is yours one of those),
so if you tell us what your system make and model are, we can be of
more help in narrowing things down starting with the manufactures
support page. The methods are similar, but you will spend less time
trying things if you can read what they say to do.

This cannot be a new issue for them - how to boot your system on
something when XP will not boot from the HDD...

Hi robbie,

As the computer is booting up, keep tapping the F8 key, until a menu is
seen. Then use your Arrow keys to highlight using the Last Good
Configuration that worked. Hit Enter.
