Getting Rid of Messenger Pop-up

I keep getting a pop-up asking me to update Window
Messenger. It appears whenever I try to access Explorer
or Outlook. Since I NEVER use Messenger and don't want
to use Messenger, I would appreciate someone telling me
on how to get rid of the underlying program without
screwing up Windows itself.
 
There are settings within outlook that allow messenger to start. Click on
options and then uncheck the "allow messenger to start with OE" check box
and it should go away.
