O.T. Can't update Hotmail

M

magineer02

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP, SP3 , Windows Firewall, Avast antivirus,Spywareblaster, and run Firefox for the Internet and all the programs work well together and are up to date.

I keep getting alerts on my User Account that a new version of Hotmail is available but I need to sign-in as the Administrator. I initially tried to do this but it seemed like it was hung in a loop and I cancelled it. Ever since whenever the option has come up and I try to complete the update it says that a previous action has not completed and to restart my computer to finish it. I have done so but it never does and keeps giving me the same message. Now it doesn’t even give me the pop-up to update.

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Live Messenger but it doesn’t seem to help. Also, if this update is to Skype or Outlook or something elsethen I don’t want it only Hotmail.

I posted my problem here but with no replies:

I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks
Robert

Hotmail is gone.
It's now Live Outlook in the Skype Mail Cloud.
You don't have to install Cloud or Skype though.
Cloud has a nasty habit of interfering with online games
that require texture uploading.

So if you look at the User Accounts control panel,
what do you see ?

In that example, the user account Dave Taylor, has administrator
privileges. That's how I interpret that picture.

In a command prompt (MSDOS) window, you can also enter

control userpasswords2

and this control panel pops up.

Notice how the user name, has some "groups" associated with
it. In the case of the "Yu" account, that person has
given themselves administrator privileges, in which case
your update script just might have worked.

You don't have to be "Administrator Administrator" to get
things done. There are other options.

If you added yourself to the Administrator group, it might
make it easier for malware to gain a foothold in the computer.
Or words to that effect.

I'm not an expert on the side effects of messing around in
there. (For example, if you clicked the wrong thing, could
you lock yourself out ? Probably.) At the moment, I don't
even understand what tool you're using, and what it was
trying to do. Maybe it's Live Messenger, and something
pushed out by Microsoft is trying to run in it, but I
haven't a clue how that works. When it comes to communications,
I'm 20 years behind... I have a few web mail accounts,
but they're not a pain in the ass to maintain. The POP3
was another story. Coupla fun moments there.

I had a suspicion that the answer would be something like that. Of course I can
still access Hotmail via URL or MSN. I don't understand why Microsoft keeps changing things when they work OK and not everyone is going to use Skype or Outlook. In any case, thanks for the information.
