Outlook Express and Messenger login problem

D

DT

I currently have XPpro/SP3 with OE and IE 6 and Messenger 4.3 (which I have
stopped using)

The issue I am having is that everytime I re-boot the pc (or disable, then
re-enable the nic card), opening OE automatically starts Messenger to logging
itself in. I have Messenger set to never log in automatically, yet it still
does this.

If, on the other hand, I open IE first (say to check Hotmail, or browse
around), then open OE.... Messenger behaves as I have it set, which is NOT to
log in.

Would someone point me to a possible solution to get Messenger and OE to
understand and follow the settings I have saved?

By the way, the settings themselves DO NOT change. Messenger ignores the
settings and logs in regardless.

Thanks for any help offered.

DT,

Outlook Express has an option about Messenger. If you have Hotmail
configured then it will then start messenger, but Microsoft have tried to
join the two which is annoying

OE also has it's own newsgroup:

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

You also have local policies which you can set Messenger not to initially
run etc.

The other user pointed you to Kelly's site. If you look at some of those
registry keys you will see she has just exported from her machine & hasn't
removed some of the junk from them. So, be very careful before importing
unnecessary junk into your registry

Bruce! You have come to the rescue!! and SO quickly, I might add!

I hadn't considered actually trying to remove Messenger, even though I
stopped using it long ago.

So, I decided to try that path, also following instructions to keep the
removal of it from putting a drag on things.

OE actually opens QUICKLY!!....... Who'da thunk?!

Messenger was okay when I was into that, but I haven't the time to mess with
it anymore and it's not needed on this current system, so it's nice to know
it's okay to actually remove it and Windows won't balk at it. :>)

Thanks for the assist!

Thanks for the reply... although I've resolved the problem to my satisfaction
now, it's nice to know some of the additional things you've pointed out to me.

I knew about the OE newsgroup, but decided to post to the general group
since I wasn't certain where the real source of the problem lie.

Thanks also for the warning. I try to be careful about what I do, but
things can get past you if you're not alert, that's for sure!
