msn messenger and hotmail

is there any way i can set msn messenger or hotmail to NOT attempt to
load up messenger when i log on to hotmail when messenger is closed?

usually, it just slows everything down while it loads up and says
"messenger offline." well, yeah, NO ****ING KIDDING!

a problem has started recently that happens maybe 25% of the time where
it somehow hangs everything up and brings that ie window to a
standstill that can't be closed. and, when i end task on the hotmail
window it says it isn't responding so i pick "end now" and then it
hangs for a few more seconds and crashes my ie.

this is driving me ****ing nuts!
