I keep getting these pop up windows telling me to download files. Someone
told me it has to do with the Windows Messenger settings. If I alter the
settings, the pop up windows won't appear.
Can someone help and provide directions?
Thanks
Greetings from England,
There's confusion here between Windows Messenger and Messenger. If you're
getting annoying little grey pop-ups with extremely dubious and unpleasant
messages, these are sonming through Messenger. Don't click the OK box - most
of them will take you to sites you don't want to visit. Use the Close cross
on the right hand corner.
You will receive postings on here telling you how to disable it but in fact
the message you're really getting is your firewall is not strong enough. You
can tear up the letter but unless you tape down the mailbox, there'll be
another one along soon.
I'll tell you how to disable Messenger on start-up but please note what I've
said about your firewall - if it's a freebie, consider subscribing to a
better one or better still, use the XP firewall. The old version covers
inbound events and should take good care of you. The new version, included
in Service Pack 2, coers inbound and outbound traffic and will be better.
Go Start>Run and type in msconfig - hit OK. Click the Start-up tab and
scroll down to the Messenger line and remove the tick from the box. While
you're in there, take the opportunity to uncheck any boxes of other
programmes you don't really need on start-up - they will still work when you
want them but this will speed up your booting process.
Click Apply and OK and Windows will force a restart. On reboot, tick the
"don't show me this message again" box and hit OK.
