How to get rid of Windows Messenger 4.7???

B

Bo Berglund

I am getting rather fed up with this...
I installed the newest Messenger (ver 7.5 or so), but the old
Messenger 4.7 still loads in the background, especially when I have
closed the new Messenger (I don't want it running all the time).

Question:
How can I get rid of Windows Messenger 4.7 *for good*???

The system is a DELL PC running XP-Pro SP2

Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger are two separate instant
messaging programs.

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

Unistall it from Add/Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

Start\Run\Services.msc and uncheck the Windows Messenger

There is no "Windows Messenger" entry.
And there are no checkboxes for the items that are there either.

I found one entry "Messenger" but it has Startup Type=Disabled.

Any other ideas?

To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

There is no shortcut or such by which I can open this program anywhere
I can find, but once in a while it appears in my system tray like it
does now.
(What is the name of the binary image, so I can kill it from Task
Manager?)

On the menu I found Tools/Options/Preferences but there is no checkbox
that says "Run this program when Windows starts", only the background
item is there. :-(
Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select

I don't use Outlook Express. Trying to open it brings me into a setup
wizard, which I don't want to enter anyway.
Tools > Options and under the General tab uncheck
"Automatically log on to Windows Messenger" and click
APPLY.

Have to try this instead....

Such a setting does not exist.... :-(

Did that.

Unistall it from Add/Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows Components.

Windows Messenger is unchecked, checking it will mean that I will
*install* it, right?
So why does it run when:
- It apparently is not installed
- The Messenger service is *disabled*

Or specificly, how can a program that by all looks is *not* installed
(and therefore should have no exe or dll file on the hard disk) still
run????

4.7 is rather old and doesn't apply to the methods you are bringing forward.

But I did not install this, it just pops up out of the blue on my XP
Pro machine (a DELL workstation that I bought 4 months ago).
I don't use it, but I occationally use MSN Messenger, and this is
up-to-date. And has an option to not autostart....

The problem really is one of privacy, when I exit MSN Messenger I
expect myself to be off the messaging system, but still Messenger 4.7
pops up alerts that people have logged in and I also receive
communications from other people who should not even see that I am on
line (I try to not be).

Do you know the name of the binary that runs Windows Messenger, so I
can delete the file from my hard disk? Should be hard for it to run
afterwards....

Disable/Remove Windows Messenger
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm

Here is Microsoft's take on its removal:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302089

You could also look here:
C:\Program Files\Messenger
And rename the *.exe files to *.old if you want to better insure it is not
running.

You could also edit the file:
C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf
Find the line:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
Change it to:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
Then Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows
Components --> Uncheck Windows Messenger..
(If it is unchecked.. Check it.. Reboot after it is done, Repeat and UNCHECK
it.)

If you are referring to the "Messenger Service", Microsoft explains
its disabling perfectly here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/stopspam.mspx

As for "MSN Messenger", this one can be removed from the Control Panel ->
Add/Remove programs. It can alternatively be stopped from loading by
selecting TOOLS -> Options inside the application itself and looking under
the "General" tab and unchecking "Automatically run Messenger when I log on
to Windows" checkbox. OK your way out then right-click on the icon in the
taskbar and exit or just log off/back on.

That help?

Yeah, it's another PITA courtesy of M$.

Read here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302089

I finally did all of the registry hacks, config unchecking etc.
And finally I also renamed the executable to something else:
C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.old.exe

I don't expect it to come back now, unless of course Windows Update
discovers that it is gone and replaces it....

I think you misread the post by Carey. I see it as answering to Windows Messenger

I have to point out the irony here.. Irony is just one of those things that
peak my interest.

Carey did START the message with the statement you quoted.. but the
"irrelevant crap snipped" by you happens to have been this:

----
To disable "Windows Messenger":

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Next, open Outlook Express and from the Toolbar select

----

Now, and here is the ironic part, you told Carey to "LEARN TO FRIKKIN
READ".. and yet - you demonstrated little proficiency in doing so yourself.
Carey did, in fact, discuss the exact application (with the OP) that the OP
was asking about.

While I admit to having seen Carey answer questions in the past without
"getting to the heart of the matter at all", this is one of those times when
Carey did discuss (with the OP) exactly what was asked about.
